As gamers might have heard by now, Nintendo President Reggie Fils-Aimé has announced his retirement and the gaming community is saying its goodbyes. Among them are two key figures heading up Nintendo's competitors, Microsoft and Sony, who took to Twitter to offer their congratulations and wish him well.

While there is certainly competition in the gaming market, it is nice to see the big three being so courteous and friendly. Xbox head Phil Spencer made a point to address Fils-Aimé's departure publicly, complimenting him on his leadership and addressing him as a friend.

Sony's Shawn Layden also reached out to Nintendo through social media, expressing his appreciation for Fils-Aimé.

These sendoffs are about more than just being professional, it is about saying farewell to a friend and beloved industry staple. Like Sony and Microsoft, the gaming community at large will likely not forget Fils-Aime. Many will miss his presence at industry events such as E3, where he became a meme legend after a demonstration of the Wii Balance Board in 2007 stating, "My body is ready." To help ease the pain of his departure, gamers are trying to become familiar with his replacement, the ironically named Doug Bowser. The Internet, as expected, is getting a real kick out of it.

Bowser will be joining the company at an interesting time. Nintendo has a long history of developing its consoles to work predominantly with its own exclusive titles, with some of the major third party games available as well. But it appears the company may be opening up and making efforts to have a closer relationship with one of its rivals.

There is a report circulating that Microsoft is making efforts to bring certain Xbox titles to the Switch. Additionally, an Xbox app could also make its way to the Nintendo console, as well as a Game Pass streaming service powered by Microsoft’s xCloud technology.
