Rumor Patrol: Xbox Lite in 2013 With Next-Gen Xbox to Follow; New Kinect in 2015

By | 5 years ago

While gamers wait in anticipation, sifting through rumors for the next generation Xbox console, the latest buzz suggests that Microsoft  may have one last trick up their sleeve before their next big console is released. For those who find the Xbox 360 too expensive still, Microsoft may be giving gamers a taste of increased affordability with the Xbox Lite that could retail for as low as $100.

Mentioned late last year, it was speculated that a smaller, cheaper Xbox, codenamed “Loop,” would become the next-gen console the industry has been anticipating (The Loop was also assumed to run on Windows 9). There are not many details about the Lite other than its potential low price tag, but it now seems possible that the “Lite” could be the aforementioned “Loop.”

This is not the first time that Microsoft has released a new, sleek version of their precious Xbox 360. The Xbox Slim came out two years ago for $199 with a 250G hard drive alongside the Kinect.

This rumor of the Xbox Lite originates from the same informer, MS Nerd, who dug up the news for Loop last year. Could his sources be accurate? If true, he also claims that the Xbox Next or Xbox 720 (the next-gen console) would follow after the Lite (current-gen console):

“At some point after [the Xbox Lite], we’ll see a Xbox Next, a true successor to the 360. Details about it are very hazy, except that, like the 360, it will do games for core-audiences and the same media apps as the other device, also with Kinect.”

MS Nerd believes that the Xbox Lite should come out in late 2013, which could place the next-gen Xbox release in 2014. Conflicting with his theory, recent analyst predictions believe that the next-gen Xbox console will appear in 2013 – something an insider on the Xbox team also suggested late last year.

On the official side of things, Microsoft confirmed that there will be no announcement of a new Xbox at E3 2012, but who is to say that Microsoft considers the Lite a new Xbox? “New” could just mean no next-gen announcement and that they could potentially unveil the Lite at this year’s E3.

The Xbox Lite may be the distraction Microsoft is looking to give gamers until the next-gen console is ready, especially if they just want to focus on the Xbox 360 in 2012. If Microsoft is going to release the Xbox Lite, Sony might want to think long and hard about their presentation since, like Microsoft, Sony says the PS4 will not be announced at E3 too.

If that news isn’t enough to satisfy, MS Nerd also suggests that a “major refreshed” Kinect would become available in 2015.  Could this be the Kinect that could read lips and emotions?

For PS3-only gamers, an inexpensive Xbox Lite could persuade them to open their minds and try an Xbox system for the right price. Is it sensible for Microsoft to release yet another variant of the Xbox 360 when its successor is expected to release the following year?
