Over the past year or so, Microsoft has acquired a number of studios under its Xbox Game Studios umbrella, including Obsidian Entertainment. During E3 last year, Microsoft announced that it was nearly done with their acquisitions. However, there are rumors of Microsoft feeling around in Poland.

Xbox Game Studios is a group of Xbox first-party studios that Microsoft has put together. So far, it's comprised of 15 studios creating games for the platform, with 12 titles publicly in development. A Polish film director with game industry insider contacts, Borys Niespielak, recently spoke on a podcast about Microsoft looking for acquisition targets in his country.

After his speculation went public, ResetEra took the reins to find out who Microsoft's potential target is. One such candidate is People Can Fly, the studio behind Bulletstorm and Gears of War: Judgement. Currently, People Can Fly is working on the co-op shooter Outriderspublished by Square Enix.

Another studio on the list is The Astronauts, behind The Vanishing of Ethan Carter and the in-development Witchfire, a dark fantasy shooter with an eerie atmosphere. The Astronauts' latest title might fit Xbox's MO, but the studio's other project seems not to. The same goes for another acquisition contender The Farm 51. That's not to say that Witchfire didn't catch Microsoft's attention, so it's still plausible.

Techland is another independent studio on the list. Techland was the team behind the original Dead Island and Dying Light. Microsoft is focusing on games as a service with the Xbox Series X, and with the year's worth of updates to Dying Light Techland has implemented, its development philosophy seems to fit in well with Xbox. The studio is currently working on Dying Light 2, but that's already being published in-house.

For those making their own predictions, there were a few other contenders, but they've already been written off as taken. Wild Hog (Shadow Warrior) was already purchased this year and Bloober Team (Layers of Fear) is a publicly-traded company. When the phrase "Polish Game Studio" is uttered by anyone, the first to come to mind is probably CD Projekt Red, and that just seems to be out of the question. With the success of The Witcher series and the hype behind its upcoming Cyberpunk 2077, it seems very unlikely that the juggernaut would sell to Microsoft right now.

What seems to hold the most solid ground is People Can Fly, but it's pretty clear that some sort of buy-out is in the works. If so, we will likely hear about it in the following months.
