Much like the zombies that dot the landscape in Telltale’s acclaimed adaption of The Walking Dead, the studio has managed to bring a genre back from the dead. While point-and-click adventure games fell out of favor in the late 90’s, the California-based developer worked diligently on releasing adventure games based on beloved franchises such as Back to the Future and Homestar Runner. But it wasn’t until The Walking Dead that the studio was thrust into the public eye.

Based on the comic book series that the hit TV series is based on, The Walking Dead tasked players with making difficult decisions and establishing connections between the small band of survivors. The first season of the episodic game was met with widespread acclaim, which led to Telltale releasing a second season. While fans are clamoring for the long gestating third season, Telltale has revealed that a miniseries will be released to bridge the gap between seasons 2 and 3, and it will feature fan favorite character Michonne.

Entitled The Walking Dead: Michonne, the micro series will be comprised of three episodes following the katana-wielding buttkicker as she embarks on an adventure of her own. Telltale says the game will be canon in the Walking Dead comic book universe, being set between issues 126 and 139. During this period, Michonne had a falling out with Rick and the group and took off, later reappearing but not revealing what she did in the interim. Telltale promises the miniseries will offer fans a better understanding of the mysterious character, all while offering the gripping stories and hard decisions that fans have come to expect from the franchise.

Telltale has stressed that this mini-series is based solely on the comic book version of The Walking Dead, and has no ties to the popular TV series. As such, the Michonne presented in the game bares no resemblance to Danai Gurira, the actress that portrays her in the TV series. Despite this, the developer hasn’t stated who will voice the character, so the possibility exists that Gurira will lend her pipes to her comic book equivalent.

Telltale has a full plate these days, releasing games based on Game of Thrones and Borderlands, all while working diligently on the third season of The Walking Dead. While these new series have received generally favorable reviews, the second season of The Walking Dead was more of a mixed bag, with many critics deeming the second season good but not great. Despite this, excitement for the third season is high, and fans are counting down the days until the third season's anticipated 2016 release.  With the third season still a ways off, The Walking Dead: Michonne should give fans a taste of what to expect out of the next season.

The Walking Dead: Michonne releases this Fall for Mac, PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
