Michelle Yeoh has played a significant role on Star Trek: Discovery since the show launched in 2017. Playing Captain Philippa Georgiou, Yeoh played the mentor to Michael Burnham, who plays the leading role in the show. With the most recent two-part episode "Terra Firma," however, things have changed radically, and thus spoiler warnings must be given before proceeding.

Here come the spoilers: Captain Philippa Georgiou is killed off early in the season, only for Michelle Yeoh to return as the Mirror Universe version of the character. Now that her character seems to have left Discovery, it would seem she is being set up for her very own spinoff show centered around Section 31.

In an interview with IGN, Yeoh discussed what it was like moving on from the show and also some of the thoughts behind how her character will handle their new environment. When asked whether a person from the dark Mirror Universe could redeem themselves, Yeoh was optimistic: "she realized that if I don't make a change, my whole empire, my whole universe is going to be destroyed and I have to start from here.” That seemed to suggest that this new version of Georgiou is going to have a lot of growing and changing to do in order to save the things she cares about.

Even with a spinoff on the horizon and more left to do with the character, it was difficult for Yeoh to leave her colleagues from Discovery behind. The big send-off was clearly an emotional event, with everyone from the cast sharing about how much the character and Yeoh's presence had meant to them during the filming and production.  Yeoh remembered the day of the final sendoff as being very heartfelt and meaningful: “I was like, ‘Okay, when we read the script, no one is allowed to cry. No one is allowed to do anything.’ But the send-off, I was like a blubbering little, I don't know what, because the whole crew and cast, they had put together a video of what Philippa Georgiou meant to them and it was a very, very special day indeed."

Yeoh didn't have much in the way of details regarding the Section 31 show she'll be involved in. She did reiterate that she was excited to see how this new version of Georgiou was going to change and grow over time, and more importantly, how she will attempt to find some sort of redemption. Even so, the actress didn't want to rule out returning to Star Trek: Discovery, remarking: “I have great hope that this is not the last you'll see of Philippa Georgiou. It can't be."

It's always a difficult thing to leave behind co-workers and stories that have become so meaningful, but hopefully Yeoh will get to continue playing the character the way she sees best in the upcoming spin off show. Maybe with enough time, she'll get the chance to return to Star Trek: Discovery yet again and Captain Philippa Georgiou will get her time in the sun yet again.
