Transformers director Michael Bay has a new film coming to theaters next year, and Universal Pictures has debuted the official trailer for the action-thriller. Titled Ambulance, the film stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Eiza González.

Based on a 2005 Danish film of the same name, Universal's Ambulance was originally going to be helmed by Phillip Noyce until he was replaced by Navot Papushado and Aharon Keshales. However, their departure ultimately resulted in Bay landing the directing gig, with principal photography finally commencing in January 2021.

Ambulance stars Gyllenhaal and Abdul-Mateen II as Danny and Will Sharp, respectively, two foster brothers who seem to have taken different paths in life. While Will is a veteran and working-class man, Danny appears to be a career criminal. The Ambulance trailer opens with Will asking Danny for help acquiring $231,000 to pay for his wife's surgery. In response, Danny offers Will the chance to take part in a $32 million bank heist, arguing that it's time for Will to "do something" for his family.

As the Ambulance trailer shows, the bank heist goes south when a police offer is shot, forcing Will and Danny to make a run for it. The duo ends up commandeering an ambulance with an EMT (played by González) who just so happens to be attending to the dying police officer. What follows is a series of fights and action set-pieces as everyone involved tries to escape the dire situation they're in. Of course, there's a sense that this cannot end well when Will says, "we don't get to walk off into the sunset," seemingly acknowledging that he faces either death or incarceration.

At one point during the trailer, Danny says, "we're not the bad guys, we're just the guys trying to get home." Considering the reason Will agrees to take part in the robbery, perhaps this line indicates Ambulance will explore the desperate measures some people will take when their financial situation leaves them with no alternative, similar to Netflix's hit series Squid Game.

If nothing else, Ambulance promises to offer some thrilling action sequences with three of today's popular stars. While Bay has his fair share of critics, particularly when it comes to the live-action Transformers films, few deny his ability to deliver spectacular explosions and car chases.

Ambulance is scheduled to be released in theaters on February 18, 2022.
