Rumors have been swirling for years that Nintendo is planning to bring the older Metroid Prime games to the Nintendo Switch, with various retail leaks and insiders seemingly confirming the existence of a Metroid Prime Trilogy Switch port. Years have gone by with no official announcement, and now it seems that instead of a Metroid Prime Trilogy that collects all three of the classic games, Nintendo may be releasing a Metroid Prime remaster on its own instead.

This news comes from Emily Rogers, a reputable Nintendo insider who claims to have heard that Nintendo is releasing a Metroid Prime remaster in 2022 to celebrate the game's 20th anniversary. Rogers is unsure if Nintendo is preparing to release the entire Metroid Prime Trilogy or not, but is "leaning toward" just a remaster of the original Metroid Prime game getting released. Nothing official has been announced by Nintendo at the time of this writing, so all fans can do is speculate for now.

If Nintendo does have a Metroid Prime remaster waiting in the wings, it seems unlikely that it will be announced at the Nintendo Direct even that's taking place on September 23. While it's totally within the realm of possibility, it would seem like an odd move for Nintendo to make a Metroid-related announcement just weeks before it launches Metroid Dread. And since we're over a year out from Metroid Prime's 20th anniversary, it seems even less likely that a Metroid Prime remaster reveal would happen anytime soon.

It should be stressed that Nintendo has not officially confirmed the rumored Metroid Prime Trilogy or the Metroid Prime 1 remaster mentioned by Rogers. As it stands, there are only two official Metroid game projects that are for sure in development. One is Metroid Dread, a 2D throwback to the original Metroid games that's set to launch on October 8, and the other is Retro Studios' Metroid Prime 4.

Fans have been waiting quite a long time for Metroid Prime 4, as the game was originally announced in 2017 as a collaboration between Nintendo and Bandai Namco. A couple of years later, Nintendo decided to pull the plug on that version of Metroid Prime 4, restarting the game's development at Retro Studios, the developer that made the original trilogy of Metroid Prime games. Nothing has been seen of Metroid Prime 4 since, and it could still be some time before the game makes its return to the spotlight.

Metroid Prime is available for the GameCube.
