Nintendo began its E3 2021 presentation with the reveal that Kazuya Mishima from Tekken is being added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but that's not the only announcement it had prepared. A new 2D Metroid game called Metroid Dread was also revealed for release this October, and it will be coming alongside two amiibo.

The title carries on the 2D style of Metroid: Samus Returns from 2017 and is billed as "Metroid 5," the sequel to Metroid Fusion. Its trailer opens up with Samus exploring planet ZDR where she encounters a robotic being called E.M.M.I., which once served as a DNA-extracting research machine according to Nintendo's official listing. Various E.M.M.I pursue her throughout the adventure, and the Treehouse gameplay presentation to follow reveals it takes exceptionally powerful attacks to destroy the rogue robots.

Both Samus in her brand-new suit, which sees her in a red, white, and blue color scheme, as well as E.M.M.I. will be released as amiibo figures on October 8. The new Metroid game, which costs $59.99, is available to pre-order now.

Amid the E3 conference, Nintendo's official Twitter account also revealed a Special Edition collection for Metroid Dread will be available alongside the new 2D title. This Special Edition includes the game with a unique cover art, a steel game case, an artbook, and five art cards depicting all of the mainline Metroid titles up to Dread.

This popular Nintendo franchise was not the only one to make a surprise appearance at today's E3 conference. WarioWare: Get it Together was announced for Switch and is set to release on September 10. Other new games revealed include remakes of Advance Wars 1 and 2, as well as Mario Party Superstars.

Meanwhile, Breath of the Wild 2 got a gameplay showcase to cap off the event. The game does not have an official title, but Nintendo confirmed it will aim to release the title in 2022, and unique mechanics such as Link phasing through solid matter were on full display as he aims to save Hyrule again.

While Metroid fans should be pleased about this new 2D game announcement, the highly anticipated Metroid Prime 4 was only confirmed to still be in development - no new information was provided. Time will tell when that game releases, but Metroid Dread should be good to hold people over in the meantime. Anyone interested in getting their hands on the new amiibo will likely have to hurry after they become available.

Metroid Dread releases October 8, 2021 for Nintendo Switch.
