Early on in Metroid Dread, players will come across yellow doors with three dots on them that will at first be a bit confounding. These locked obstacles need to be opened by a specific upgrade to Samus' suit, which can be found in the Dairon region of Planet ZDR.

The name of the upgrade needed to unlock these three dot doors is the Wide Beam, which will be handy for more than simply opening these pesky doors. After getting the Wide Beam, players will be able to interact with other three-dotted objects as well as take down enemies quicker in Metroid Dread.

  • From the bottom rightmost exit from Dairon's E.M.M.I robot zone, keep to the left of the large room with many platforms
  • Proceed to the bottom of the room and then go left through a regular Power Beam Door

  • Pass the Max Recharge station and go as left as possible until one can't go that way anymore
  • From here, go up and to the right until the player reaches another regular Power Beam Door
  • In the room beyond will be an Item Sphere containing the Wide Beam

The Wide Beam will allow players to destroy any three-dot door, known in-game as "Wide Beam Covers", by simply shooting them once. After a single blast, these obstacles will be destroyed and will never hinder the player again--which is more satisfying than it should be.

In addition to being able to open these doors, players will also be able to move large rectangular obstacles known in Metroid Dread as Wide Beam Boxes. However, this is only possible after obtaining the Charge Beam upgrade as well, for Wide Beam Boxes cannot be moved with a single shot. It will take a fully charged blast with a Wide Beam upgrade to push these obstacles out of Samus' way.

As players may be able to guess from the additional energy rounds being fired, the Wide Beam upgrade will also do more damage to enemies, which makes traversing the hostile Planet ZDR a fair deal easier.

Metroid Dread is available on the Nintendo Switch.
