Though Metroid Dread still bears all the hallmarks of a classic 2D Metroid game, there's one thing that sets it apart from its predecessors: fear. This is mostly derived from the seven E.M.M.I robots that stalk Samus throughout her time on planet ZDR, making certain sections of the game incredibly tense.

Much like the Xenomorph in Alien Isolation or Mr. X in Resident Evil 2, it initially feels as though all players can do when faced with Metroid Dread's fearsome foes is run. Granted, this is certainly true at times, but, as the story progresses, players will eventually acquire the tools needed to take the robots offline for good.

The good news is that Samus can destroy the robots and will even unlock new equipment for each one that she dispatches. Unfortunately, however, the weapon needed to take out an E.M.M.I., the Omega Blaster, can only handle a single target, and can only be acquired by absorbing the energy from a broken Central Unit.

Thankfully, the Central Unit that provides the energy for the first Omega Blaster is already broken, though the following six will need to be defeated in battle. Once Samus has absorbed their energy, players will need to hold the L button to aim the Omega Blaster, the R button to charge it, and then tap the Y button when they are ready to fire.

Players should aim their shot at the blinking red core on the target's head. The robots will sometimes adjust their height as they get closer to Samus though, so players should be ready to readjust their shot at a moment's notice. It's generally best to lure the E.M.M.I. to a long and straight corridor to take it out, as this will give players a bit more time to operate.

The first robot that players encounter in Artaria is pretty badly damaged and so its core is already fully exposed. Subsequent E.M.M.I. do have measures in place to protect their cores though, so players will need to overcome them before using the Omega Blaster, usually by firing rapidly at them with Samus' arm blaster until the outer casing overheats.

How to Avoid the Robots in Metroid Dread

Due to the scarcity of Central Units, players will need to get good at avoiding the robots as well as destroying them. Running is generally the best way to accomplish this, and players should be sure to take advantage of the fact that they can open up the map at any time as they flee. Samus can also counter the robot's attack by pressing the X button, although it's best not to bank on this as the timing is very tight.

After defeating the Artaria boss, Corpius, players will also unlock the Phantom Cloak. As well as helping Samus to get through motion detector doors, this invaluable piece of equipment also allows her to hide from E.M.M.I. It's worth noting, however, that there is a limit on how long the cloak can be active and that the robots will still be able to find Samus in the event that they make physical contact with or hear her.
