The Chozo play an important role in the Metroid series and are responsible for many of the iconic weapons and upgrades that make Samus one of the most renowned and respected bounty hunters in the galaxy. The mysterious alien race once again has an important part to play in Metroid Dread, not just through the villainous Raven Beak, but also the X-Parasite-infested Chozo Soldiers that stalk Samus throughout Planet ZDR.

Much like the Robot Chozo Soldier mini-bosses, Chozo soldiers show up at numerous points throughout Metroid Dread. They get progressively stronger too, meaning that players will need to adapt their strategy from battle to battle if they're to have any hope of emerging from them unscathed. There are also three different types of Chozo Soldier; each one more powerful than the last.

Where to Find the Chozo Soldiers

Players will encounter five Chozo Soldiers throughout the game, the first of which is black and can be found in Elun. Later on, they'll come up against another black Chozo Soldier in Ghavoran followed by two red ones in Artaria and Hanubia respectively. The final Chozo Soldier, which shows up in Hanubia almost immediately after the second red one, is an Elite unit and is gold in color.

How to Beat the Chozo Soldiers (Phase 1)

At the beginning of the fight, black Chozo Soldiers will attack using two main moves. The first of these is a spear lunge and can be dodged fairly easily using a combination of jumps and Flash Shifts. They'll typically use this when Samus has her back against the wall, so players should aim to Flash Shift over to the other side of them and then begin firing off missiles.

Their second attack sees them jump to the nearest wall and then hit players with a powerful vertical strike. When this happens, players should Flash Shift away to the left or right. Though not always the case, jumping before doing so will usually result in Samus taking some damage, so it's best to avoid doing so.

Both red and gold Chozo Soldiers will begin the fight with a shield, and this will need to be destroyed with missiles or charge shots before the first phase can end. They also have a third attack where they use their shields to bash Samus, which will present a very brief counter opportunity. The timing is tight, but successfully executing it will allow players a few seconds of unchallenged attack time.

Ideally, players should be hitting the Chozo Soldiers with missiles as often as possible throughout the fight; at least until they have unlocked Storm Missiles by beating Escue, anyway. Eventually, once enough damage has been dealt, the Chozo Soldier will get down on all fours and let out a howl, which is how players will know when the first phase is over.

In many ways, the second phase of the fight really isn't too dissimilar from the first, though there is one big difference. Now, when the Chozo Soldier jumps onto the wall, it will instead fire off a stream of black sludge in Samus' direction. This can happen up to three times per cycle, after which the enemy will dive into the center of the room causing a small wave of black sludge to ripple out.

As is often the case, the best way to avoid this attack is to use jumps and Flash Shifts. In fact, it's possible to get beneath the sludge wave and get in some easy shots if players act quickly. Players should also avoid being in the center of the room where possible and make sure to jump just after the soldier lands back on the ground.

After players have dealt enough damage, they'll be presented with a counter opportunity in which they'll need to press the Y button twice in relatively quick succession when prompted. Doing so will end the fight then and there, but, if players mess up, they'll need to continue attacking the boss until they get another counter opportunity. The fight won't end until they eventually pull one of them off.

What's the Difference Between Black, Red & Elite Chozo Soldiers

The biggest difference between the three types is that black Chozo Soldiers do not have a shield, meaning that they have one fewer attack than their red and gold counterparts. Other than that, it's simply a matter of durability and strength, with the Elite Chozo Soldier able to hit much harder and withstand a lot more punishment than the black ones, and red ones falling somewhere in the middle.
