The Metro series has seen a considerable amount of success recently, with Metro Exodus' overall positive reviews and the new 4A Games-developed Metro installment currently being developed illustrative of this. Now, there could be another indicator of success for the franchise.
The original Metro 2033 released for Xbox 360 and PC in 2010, and later on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, had been based on a novel of the same name. Taking place in post-apocalyptic Russia, a movie inspired by the same novel is now in the works. A director and cast have yet to be revealed for the Metro 2033 movie. However, author Dmitry Glukhovsky expressed that the team involved is very trustworthy.
"Our ambitions turned out to be similar: to create a world-class blockbuster and stun even those who have read the trilogy and know it by heart," said Metro author Glukhovsky. "I am ready to become a creative producer of the movie and help create it with both my advice and action.”
The movie's producers described their confidence in the movie's success, with one citing the popularity of post-apocalyptic settings with gamers and consumers in Russia. Additionally, Central Partnership director Vadim Vereshchagi said that the Metro 2033 film "is difficult to adapt for the screen but it will undoubtedly pay off as a major hit at the box office.” Right now, the movie is set to premiere in Russia on January 1, 2022. It may be a long way off, but fans of the series have the Metro games to tide them over regardless.
It is generally rare that novels have different kinds of adaptations based on them. Video games based on novels are especially hard to come by as it is. The Witcher books are being adapted into a Netflix series and have previously received video game adaptations, though this instance appears to be more of an exception in nature. Of course, the hope is always that the adaptation can live up to the quality of the source material. Given the author believes the movie is in good hands and will be offering guidance along the way, the Metro 2033 movie may see great results after all.
Metro Exodus is currently available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. It will also be available on Google Stadia.
