French developer Dotemu, in association with SNK, has announced the newest title in the Metal Slug series, Metal Slug Tactics, offering a new spin on an iconic arcade classic. The Metal Slug series has prided itself on its fast-paced running and gunning action in previous entries, offering players various weapons and tanks to dismantle the opposition.

In Metal Slug Tactics, players will need to strategically dispatch their units to place themselves in advantageous situations, similar to other tactical RPGs including the XCOM seriesFans of the Metal Slug series will be pleased to discover that the sprite-based graphics, as well as its over-the-top violence, seems to blend well within a genre that's outside of what the franchise is known for.

The gameplay trailer features the returning cast of Marco, Eri, Fio, and Tarma, each of whom appears to have a special class assigned to each unit. One of the gameplay features highlighted in the trailer is "Sync," which appears to be a method of units linking actions into another within a sequence.

Metal Slug Tactics also promises "roguelike" elements, incorporated with its base tactical RPG gameplay, which means that players will more than likely expect to lose while still finding ways to maintain their progress. Generated levels, which are also elements of roguelike-style games, are also expected to make their way in Tactics, allowing no two playthroughs to be exactly alike from each other.

While a tactical RPG may be unique for the series, it isn't the first time that Metal Slug has branched out into other genres. In 2014 and 2016, Metal Slug Defend and Attack were tower defense games released on mobile, with another mobile game currently in development. The main characters Fiolina Germi, Marco Rossi, and the Mars People, a recurring enemy type, have made guest appearances in The King Of Fighters Maximum Impact 2, Neo Geo Battle Coliseum, and SNK vs Capcom: SVC Chaos respectively.

Currently, Metal Slug Tactics is slated to release only on Steam, although fans shouldn't rule out a console release as it may be revealed later. This was also a similar case with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge, another game that Dotemu is working on that was recently confirmed for the Switch alongside its Steam release. While it has been almost a decade since the last non-spinoff release, fans of Metal Slug, its cartoon violence, and visuals, will have an interesting game to look out for upon release.

Metal Slug Tactics is currently in development for PC.
