While the Spike Video Game Awards has many big reveals yet to be unleashed, one of their more juicy ones may just have been spoiled, as a new trailer for Metal Gear Solid: Rising has leaked online. What’s most interesting about this trailer is that it completely changes what gamers had previously known about the game, namely its title and developer.

As you would have seen in the trailer below, Metal Gear Solid: Rising has now become Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, with developmental duties now being overseen by prominent Japanese developer Platinum Games. Original developer Kojima Productions has not completely abandoned the project, although head Hideo Kojima might have, they are still staying on as producer for the project.

Originally meant to make its big debut at the VGAs, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is sure to be a polarizing reveal for fans of the Metal Gear Solid franchise. Without Kojima, and with Platinum now at the helm, fans might be wary of the direction this already suspect title is headed. Thankfully, the trailer shows that at least the core concepts of the original project are preserved, namely Raiden’s ability to slice and dice anything and everything in his path.

If there were any developer that was to take over a role originally started by the eclectic team at Kojima, I would say that Platinum is the best fit. Delivering games with whacky design sensibilities and meandering storylines — titles like Bayonetta and Vanquish — Platinum Games should be able to carry on from Kojima’s lead.

While I can’t figure that the big VGAs reveal will feature anything but an intro by Kojima, followed by this trailer, the event itself might hold more information, like perhaps a release date. For now, it’s best to start accepting the new direction this project is taking on, and give Platinum Games the chance to show us what they’ve got.

What do you think about Platinum Games taking on developmental duties from Kojima? How do you feel about Metal Gear Solid: Rising making the title change to Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance?
