With numerous video game movies finding significant success financially when they land in theaters, it seems now's the time for some of the industry's biggest franchises to get their moment on the big screen. From Sonic the Hedgehog to Detective Pikachu, it finally seems as though Hollywood is looking to adapt gaming's biggest properties authentically, with the stories and styles befitting their console-based counterparts.

Of course, one of the most talked bout video game movies currently in the works is Jordan Vogt-Roberts' Metal Gear Solid adaptation, with the director frequently speaking at length about his love for the series and desire to bring Kojima's world to cinemas. It seems the production has hit some road bumps, however, with the director claiming on Gary Whitta's Animal Talking show that, while the script is finished, he hasn't been greenlit to film just yet.

"Look, this is my baby. I've been working on this thing for six years, trying to make it so it is the disruptive, punk-rock, true to Metal Gear, true to Kojima-san spirit version of what this is," Vogt-Roberts tells Whitta, claiming "I will continue to fight for it every day." Yet, the director elaborates on why pulling off a project with such an eccentric tone as Metal Gear is such a difficult sell in the movie industry, claiming "It's a difficult thing, getting any movie made in Hollywood is hard. Getting something like Metal Gear made ... it is so complex [so] it's even harder. That's why I'm trying to make it for a budget where you can do crazy s**t, where you can do the Metal Gear version of it where it isn't neutered."

It seems that Vogt-Roberts envisioned himself filming at this point, yet sadly, current world events prevented that from happening. "I thought I was going to be on set on this movie a year ago," he tells Whitta. "COVID has sort of changed everything and we're figuring out a bunch of stuff." Interestingly, he goes on to mention that his dream also includes an animated series surrounding the franchise that would debut alongside the movie, claiming "I will fight to try and get this animated series going in conjunction with it." According to the director, he'd aim to try and get David Hayter to reprise his iconic role as Solid Snake for the show.

Its clear Jordan Vogt-Roberts is incredibly passionate about his work on Metal Gear Solid, so, hopefully, fans will get to see his big-screen adaptation of the franchise in the near future. Until then, he left fans with a fairly impassioned message, telling them that "It's tough getting movies made, especially something where you're trying to be bold like this. I will fight every single day until I can't."

A Metal Gear Solid film adaptation is currently in production.
