Hideo Kojima's Metal Gear Solid franchise is well known for its intricate and detailed plots as well as its wide cast of unique characters, so one Metal Gear Solid fan took it upon themselves to track each injury suffered by six of the main characters and put them into an image collage. This is quite the feat, since the series doesn't go easy on any of the protagonists.

The first Metal Gear Solid game came out in 1998, and Hideo Kojima's creative vision amassed him, and the series, a cult following. The games are set in a much more futuristic version of the real world, with several characters using extensive cybernetic modifications, and the gameplay has a heavy focus on stealth and shooting. Additionally Metal Gear Solid has featured variety of ruthless main characters over the years, which makes sense given the series' military and espionage themes.

Reddit user Shiningcrow posted their image collage detailing all the injuries and causes of death for Revolver Ocelot, Big Boss, Venom Snake, Kazuhira Miller, Raiden, and Solid Snake. It's an impressive list, but Raiden comes out on top with nine injuries, including having all of his limbs severed, losing an eye, being shot multiple times, and having almost his entire body replaced with cybernetics. Big Boss comes in at a close second with eight injuries, which include losing an eye, multiple broken bones, and eventually being killed by the FOXDIE virus in Metal Gear Solid 4.

This image, while humorous, does a pretty good job of showcasing how brutal the Metal Gear Solid series can be for its main characters. The games clearly don't pull any punches and not even the most well-known protagonists like Solid Snake and Raiden are protected by plot armor. It's a very noticeable departure from some franchises where the main characters might receive a few cuts and scrapes, but tend to make it out in one piece by the end of the story. In contrast, many of the Metal Gear "Snake" characters have met their deaths.

So many characters—especially protagonists—receiving such extreme injuries and the occasional cybernetic limb replacement is part of what makes Metal Gear Solid what it is, and no doubt one of the reasons the series has gotten its cult fanbase. Naturally, not everyone is going to be a huge fan of a series where their favorite characters are brutally maimed and often die tragic deaths. However, there's still a strong enough fanbase that one Metal Gear Solid 2 fan made a third-person camera mod for the game 20 years after the game was released.
