Without a doubt, the Metal Gear Solid franchise would not be the same without the unique and striking work of the Japanese artist Yoji Shinkawa, who has tirelessly contributed art to many of the entries in the series. Now, in order to compile and preserve some of his work for future generations, Dark Horse Comics is publishing a two-book set of Shinkawa-san’s art for several of the games in Hideo Kojima‘s landmark stealth-action property.
This definitive collection of Yoji Shinkawa’s work from Dark Horse Comics is set to contain 800 pages of concept and key art for characters, weapons, and vehicles from Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of the Patriots, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. Dubbed The Art of Metal Gear Solid I-IV, the art book is currently available for pre-order directly through Amazon for $80, and it is projected to be shipped on May 8, 2018.
For those unaware, collections of Yoji Shinkawa’s art have been available for purchase in a plethora of different volumes for quite some time, but they were only available in Japanese. With this being the case, Dark Horse Comics’ version of The Art of Metal Gear Solid I-IV has been translated into English, but the company has decided to leave the Japanese handwriting on the images included intact.
Of course, while Shinkawa-san is primarily known for his work for Metal Gear Solid, the artist has had his hand in a variety of different properties such as the Zone of the Enders franchise and more. Not to mention, he recently supplied Call of Duty: Black Ops 3‘s Zombies Chronicles with art for the four main characters in the first-person shooter’s expansion, so perhaps we will one day see a book that solely features his work outside of the MGS franchise.
Thankfully, Yoji Shinkawa continues to work within the industry, as the Metal Gear Solid artist is providing Square Enix’s forthcoming survival action shooter with mechs called Left Alive with his signature artwork. Plus, he has been confirmed as the Art Director for Hideo Kojima’s enigmatic PlayStation 4-exclusive known as Death Stranding, so one can only hope to see Shinkawa-san’s distinctive style flourish for many years to come.
Dark Horse Comics’ The Art of Metal Gear Solid I-IV is set to release on May 8, 2018.
