If there was any voice actor controversy to top Kevin Conroy not voicing Batman in Arkham Origins, it would have to be David Hayter not voicing Old Snake in Metal Gear Solid 5. Hayter, along with the likes of Nolan North, Conroy, and Mark Hamil is one of the few voice actors who is inextricably linked with his character.

And so, when Hideo Kojima broke the news that Hayter’s services would not be solicited for Metal Gear Solid 5, fans were up in arms. However, given that Hayter confirmed the news on April 1st, most were wary about taking Kojima’s claims at face value.

As it turns out, fans were right to doubt Kojima, as evidence continues to mount that suggests Hayter will return for Metal Gear Solid 5. Hayter himself teased an appearance at E3 on Twitter — where Kojima Productions will reportedly be showing off Metal Gear Solid 5 and Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes.

Then came a teaser for Konami’s Pre-E3 Press Conference (seen above), which will air live on GameSpot on June 6th. In the teaser, Konami promises to reveal the voice of Snake at their event.

When taken at face value, it seems like Kojima is preparing an announcement that most have already seen coming. Hayter’s tweet and the trailer coincide nicely with each other, and this isn’t the first time Kojima has been purposefully obtuse.

Metal Gear Solid Snake Voice Actor Announcement

Most knew Phantom Pain was a Metal Gear game from the instant the trailer played at the Spike VGAs (not me), which made the prolonged viral marketing campaign all the more baffling. This David Hayter business has been decidedly light on guys with face bandages and hidden text, so clearly Kojima has learned something about drawn out, confusing marketing.

But what if Hayter wasn’t voicing Snake? What if Kojima took the stage on Thursday night and announced someone completely different?

Who are we kidding it has to be Hayter, right? Konami would not be making a big deal out of a voice actor announcement if it wasn’t.

Do you think that Kojima will eventually announce Hayter as the voice of Snake for Metal Gear Solid 5? Why the secrecy over a voice actor?
