For many years the Metal Gear Solid property has been associated with PlayStation. Despite the franchise initially debuting on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987, every major installment in the series since has been on a Sony platform, and that will hold true once more with the arrival of Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain later this September.

Given the partnership that the companies have shared over the years, which has resulted in most of the games remaining exclusive to PlayStation for a number of years, Sony has announced a special edition PlayStation 4 console based on Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain.

The new system ditches the standard black aesthetic that's been so heavily associated with the platform thus far – with the exception of the limited edition white system that launched alongside Destiny. In its place is a red, gold, and black PlayStation 4 that looks to be based on the mechanical arm that Big Boss himself has in the new game.

Clearly the man-made limb that the original Snake utilizes in The Phantom Pain will play a major role in the new title, as a replica of the gadget is included in the Collector's Edition of the game as well. While that's all well and good, however, the sleek looking console is currently only confirmed for release in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand on September 1.

Metal Gear Solid 5 The Phantom Pain Limited Edition PS4

North American fans will surely be disappointed by this news, as the series is still incredibly popular and has a very loyal fan base in the Western world. Of course, this could (and likely will) change in the coming months, but as of this writing there're no known plans to bring the SKU overseas. Still, it's hard not to remain optimistic that gamers residing in N.A. will have their shot at picking up the limited edition PS4.

With all of the controversy surrounding Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain and its publisher Konami, it's good to see that the project is still on track – with ample promotion to boot. The bundle itself will include a copy of the game, as well as a funky Diamond Wolf-themed PS4 controller, so it's a no-brainer for dedicated fans that have yet to pickup a current-gen platform or just have an ample amount of cash on-hand.
