When PC players logged onto Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain over the weekend, they witnessed a cutscene that seemed like it would never come. While the nuclear disarmament event seems as unlikely as a Metal Gear character appearing in Death Stranding, it nevertheless triggered, but it wasn’t supposed to happen.

For those unfamiliar, the nuclear disarmament event was an official metagame ending that revolved around removing every nuclear weapon in the game’s online servers. Considering the hard-fought meta-conflict in the game, the event never seemed likely, as periodic reports showed that several nukes still existed in the game. However, a glitch with the Steam version of the game triggered the event.

The cutscene boldly and ironically declared, “the last nuke’s been decommissioned. It’s over, Boss. I thought this day would never come. ” However, the day did not actually come, causing many players to believe that Konami triggered it as a hype-builder for Metal Gear Survive (which a producer says has no loot boxes.) Some even believed it was due to the improbability of the event, and some even believed it was in preparation of “Chapter Three: Peace.” It's also possible PC players glitched the game by making the number roll over its total of nukes and read zero, but there has been no official word on if that actually happened.

As indicated by the above tweet, it seems most likely to have been the result of a glitch and was not intentional on Konami’s part. While this cutscene has been on the Internet for some time, it is not the event but its implications that has fans riled up. Many believed this event would unlock “Chapter Three: Peace,” even though that was never confirmed, and were excited about playing more traditional Metal Gear. Now, it seems fans may have to content themselves with this Metal Gear Solid parody on the Nintendo Switch.

While this may upset the dedicated Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain fan base, especially those who have been working diligently on nuclear disarmament, mistakes happen. Perhaps, this event could lead to the fabled “Chapter Three: Peace,” but it seems more likely that the upcoming Metal Gear Survive will have to sate many gamer’s Metal Gear fix.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is available now on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. Metal Gear Survive is set to release on February 20 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
