Fans of the Metal Gear Solid franchise have had a lot to be excited and upset about in recent months. After teasing and eventually confirming a direct followup to Ground Zeroes before much about the initial game was even known, Konami informed gamers that Kiefer Sutherland will be replacing David Hayter as the voice of the iconic Snake. There’s been a lot of news pertaining to the acclaimed property in 2013, and now those who’ve been following recent developments have a concrete release date for the long gestating MGS installment.
Konami announced earlier today that Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes will be launching on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, and PS4 on March 18, 2014.
Accompanying this blockbuster news were a couple of new trailers that highlight several aspects of the game. One video, featured prominently above, is roughly 15 minutes long and shows off several of the new gameplay mechanics that’ll be present in Ground Zeroes. Stealth elements have been completely redefined, with ghost-style play being much more difficult in the game’s ‘Hard’ mode. There are several other new elements, namely the ability to mark enemies and Reflex mode, and they should help to effectively modernize the franchise and make it more enjoyable for longtime fans.
The second trailer that was released should appeal to Xbox players, as it highlights the exclusive mission that’ll be present in the Xbox One and Xbox 360 versions of the Metal Gear Solid 5 prologue. PlayStation users learned that they’d be receiving their own exclusive mission that brings a PS1-styled Solid Snake back into the limelight, but Konami was quick to assure Xbox fans that they too would be scoring their own level. This mission, titled ‘Jamais Vu’, throws Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance protagonist Raiden into a playable role in an attempt to take out hostile body snatchers.
With Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes arriving in the near future, there’s sure to be ample amounts of new information hitting soon. As Konami prepares to release Snake’s latest adventure in just a few months, fans have plenty to sink their teeth into with today’s announcements.
