The most recent Metal Gear spinoff, Metal Gear Survive, has been the subject of as much criticism as its predecessor, The Phantom Pain, has praise. Despite sales being low, Konami has been regularly implementing new updates and content to keep fans coming back to the game and to address some of the criticisms that befell it in the first place. One of the most recent updates was the co-op event titled Rescue Mission, and for the month of April, Konami is rolling out another update, this time calling back to a bygone era of the franchise.

Beginning on April 10th, a new cooperative event titled The Encounter 1964 takes direct inspiration from one of the most popular Kojima games back in the day: Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. While Metal Gear Survive itself was found to be a lackluster Metal Gear game and an okay survival game, fans who continue to enjoy it can expect a few cosmetic items based on its predecessor to become available in just a few short days.

So far, the exact nature of the event is yet to be unveiled, but gamers are confirmed three items they'll be able to unlock.  The cosmetic items include: EVA’s jumpsuit, Naked Snake’s fatigues, and a crocodile cap. There will also be a new cassette tape available that elaborates on the Shagohod, the nuclear-ballistic tank in Snake Eater. Players will most likely have to grind through the event to earn these new items, but at least it's safe to say they won't be gambling with loot boxes in hopes of getting what they want.

This announcement comes as good news for fans of the game that may have found it lacking in Metal Gear content. Our Metal Gear Survive review didn't recommend the game to hardcore fans of the series, as its similarity to the other games seems to be in name alone. However, Konami can at least inject some of the franchise's namesake into the base game through these updates.  The title released only a couple months ago in February, but if it continues to follow this trend it seems co-op events might add a new perspective to old experiences

With backlash on some of Konami's practices such as having to pay for additional save slots, some nostalgia is probably the best way for the studio to make the most of this tight situation. Hopefully, fans have more events like this to look forward to in the future.

Metal Gear Survive is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
