Metal Gear Solid 2 is a classic title that released in 2001 to critical and commercial success. While Konami has not said anything about Metal Gear since the series' last title in 2018, Metal Gear Survive, rumors have been circulating about possible remakes of some of the most popular Metal Gear titles, in particular Metal Gear Solid 2.
It appears the wishes of fans may soon be fulfilled. A new Twitter account by the name of Tom Olsen, claiming to be a technician at the "Big Shell," has been tweeting in character to seemingly tease something new for Metal Gear.
Tom Olsen's newest tweet contains a static-covered video of a first-person look at some familiar locations from Metal Gear Solid 2. The video does now show very much other than a character slowly walking around the environments, but the video is also accompanied by cryptic language that may include more hidden clues for fans. The account has begun building a sizable following of Metal Gear fans that are more than happy to play along. For fans, it also serves as a sign of hope for Metal Gear, as some were growing concerned for the series after the Metal Gear Solid board game was unceremoniously canceled.
It is unclear exactly what sort of announcement the account is building toward. Many fans have been hoping for an announcement that a new studio will start developing games for the series. However, the footage in the tweets looks to be from older titles, and with the recent leak that several Metal Gear Solid remakes are in development that seems much more likely. Some fans responding to the tweets have theorized that the first-person perspective of the footage and floaty movement could be indications of a VR remake of Metal Gear Solid 2, which has received mixed reactions.
Whatever the Tom Olsen account is building toward, it is good that Metal Gear Solid fans should have something to look forward to. While the marketing technique is a bit unorthodox, the games have likely not been abandoned, as it would be a shame for a series with as much of a massive impact on the games industry as Metal Gear Solid to simply disappear. Hopefully, fans will not have to wait much longer to see exactly what Tom Olsen is talking about.
