The future of the Metal Gear franchise has been a little up in the air since Hideo Kojima's well publicized departure from Konami back in late 2015. Despite the lack of official news and the somewhat underwhelming release of Metal Gear Survive, though, fans of the series remain hopeful that an update regarding the franchise's future will be arriving soon. If recent events are anything to by, they may not have to wait too much longer.

Over the past few weeks and months, there have been a growing number of Metal Gear related rumors; covering everything from potential ports and remakes to brand new Metal Gear games. Although there's been very little hard evidence to actually back some of these predictions up, the sheer volume of them would seemingly suggest that something is definitely in the works. Now, the official Metal Gear Twitter account has added further fuel to the fire with a fairly cryptic tweet.

Responding to another tweet from a newly created account, the message appears to tease the arrival of some Metal Gear related news at some point next week. Although the exact nature of said news is not made clear, the account that the tweet had been replying to may provide some clues as to what fans can potentially expect.

The account belongs to a fictional character named Tom Olsen, who, despite not actually appearing in the game, seems to have strong connections with Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. Their account bio lists them as a "Maintenance Technician at the Big Shell," which, as series fans will know, served as a major location in the second MGS game. That the account was created less than a week ago and has been tweeting regularly and almost exclusively about the Big Shell could be seen to further back this up.

The tweet comes just a few days on from a rumor on 4chan which claimed that a Metal Gear Solid collection could soon be coming to the PS5. Apparently, this collection would include the first four Metal Gear Solid games, allegedly featuring the Substance edition of MGS2 that was ported to the original Xbox rather than the base version that released on the PS2.

Alternatively, an earlier rumor from a prominent leaker had instead suggested that Bluepoint Games is in the process of remaking the original Metal Gear Solid, although, as with the 4chan rumor, they were unable to provide any concrete sources. While it's certainly possible that the person in charge of the official Metal Gear Twitter account was simply having some fun with a role-playing fan, both the timing and the target of the tweet suggest that there could definitely be something more to it. Thankfully, fans will only have to wait one week to find out.
