Back at TGS 2012, publisher Konami dropped a new trailer for Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance that purported to unveil a large portion of the game’s story. However, since Tokyo Game Show is focused on (obviously) Japanese audiences it didn’t feature English dubbing, only subtitles to explain what was going on.
Thankfully, a new version of the trailer has been released that better showcases how the game’s expository cutscenes will play out for Western audiences. Since this is a Metal Gear game, though, be prepared for quite the extensive trailer, a five-minute long one in fact.
As far as the game’s story is concerned it’s still pretty hard to get a grasp on what is going on. Raiden’s new cyber ninja persona appears to be working with some form of government, and battles a few unique enemy types along the way, but who or what they are isn’t made clear by the trailer.
It’s still a lot of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance‘s story to take in, but at the very least the trailer promises some of Kojima Productions’ signature villain types will make an appearance in the game. Take for example, the robotic woman with multiple arms — classic Kojima, but also a perfect fit for developer Platinum Games‘ signature style of epic boss fight.
The trailer also further explores the game’s slicing-and-dicing mechanic, one of the few elements still present from the Metal Gear Solid: Rising reveal several years ago. Obviously the game has gone through several evolutions since then, and has been placed in the hands of Bayonetta developer Platinum Games, but Revengeance still has a lot of the key markers of a Metal Gear game.
Back at Comic-Con we were able to go hands-on with the game to see just how well it stacks up against fan expectations. While Raiden might be the game’s star, and there’s quite the convoluted plot at play, this feels much more akin to a Platinum product than a Kojima one. We’ll see how fans react to it when the game releases early next year.
What do you think of the new villain types in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance? Do they carry on Kojima’s signature character design?
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance releases February 19, 2013 for the PS3 and Xbox 360.
