As promised Hideo Kojima took to the stage at The Game Awards to give attendees their first look at Metal Gear Online, the co-op multiplayer offering for Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. The footage Kojima had to show featured plenty of intriguing elements and certainly looked like cooperative MGS 5, even if it wasn't the competitive mode that many hoped it would be.

For all intents and purposes, Metal Gear Online looks exactly like players would expect a cooperative version of Metal Gear Solid might look like. There are some tactical recon bits and a little bit of stealth, but things eventually escalate into full-scale war. And of course it wouldn't be a Metal Gear trailer without a little tongue-in-cheek elements, which in this case took the form of an adorable stuffed dog.

While there are obviously a lot of questions with Metal Gear Online, the footage looks promising. The new mechanics of Metal Gear Solid 5 lend themselves perfectly to a multiplayer setting, offering up frenetic gunplay with some cool stealth tech. And the crazy tech Kojima Productions has cooked up is sure to give players plenty of ways to tackle any situation.

Metal Gear Online Reveal

As they mentioned, this is only the first taste of Metal Gear Online, with more to come in the months leading up to MGS 5's release in 2015.

What do you think of the Metal Gear Online footage? How would you like to see Kojima evolve the Metal Gear Online concept?
