10 Bloodborne (Metascore 92)

bloodborne giant spider

Bloodborne is perceived by many fans to be the greatest game to come out of From Software and for good reason. The action RPG gameplay is really polished, the world is grim and grand, the bosses feel like fair but daunting challenges, and the plot is so twisted and intricate fans are still trying to dissect it.

This PS4 exclusive title has a lot going for it and it looks fabulous. Fans have been demanding a follow up to this great horror title and it’s astonishing something hasn’t been promised yet. Though it’s understandable that the developers would be nervous trying to out perform this great game with a sequel.

9 Journey (Metascore 92)

Journey is the kind of game that makes you feel like you’re exploring the world depicted on a beautiful piece of art hanging in a gallery somewhere. This indie title has gorgeous graphics, a haunting soundtrack, and is very relaxing to play.

With no words this game somehow manages to convey a variety of emotions that tugs at players heartstrings. Admittedly it’s not very long, clocking in at a little over two hours, but what it manages to achieve in two hours is impressive.

8 Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End (Metascore 93)

Uncharted 4

The developers at Naughty Dog have taken all the lessons they learned from the Uncharted franchise and used it to create the very polished and stunning Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. It’s an action-packed adventure that brings the rich characters to life with stunning PS4 graphics and delivers on a complex and emotional story.

The gameplay is flawless and the pacing is good, it’s not uncommon to find you’ve been playing for several hours straight without realizing it. It’s a game that neatly wraps up what came before it while paving the way for something new.

7 Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (Metascore 93)

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is a game that tapped into the old nostalgia the franchise had built while simultaneously creating something entirely new. It’s the first game in the series to have true open world gameplay and it did it well.

Stealth action games haven’t been terribly popular lately, but Metal Gear Solid V made a strong case that it was because not many developers had done it properly. There are some flaws, but the greatness of this game makes it really easy to sweep them under the rug.

6 Persona 5 (Metascore 93)

This coming of age story has a young man navigating two worlds as he seeks to understand the powers he has and his role in the darkness that lurks behind everything. It took what made Persona 3 and 4 good games and combined them into a single title.

The challenge is deep without being obnoxious or unfair, multiple strategies serve in the various boss fights with some of the most colorful characters found on both sides of the battlefield. The grind can get overbearing at times as it is a JRPG at heart and the plot can get wonky, but it’s definitely a great game according to fans.

5 XCOM 2: War Of The Chosen (Metascore 93)

War of the Chosen refines and improves everything about the second

The XCOM series as a whole has been hovering under the radar of mainstream gamers and the expansion War of The Chosen for XCOM 2 bought it screaming to the forefront for many. Tasked with leading a squad of super soldiers in a fight against a hostile alien race and the mysterious Chosen, the gameplay is fun and the strategy is deep.

It took the already great XCOM 2 buffed out the flaws and introduced a lot of rich content for fans to experience. For many this wasn’t a DLC, but an entirely new game.

4 God Of War (Metascore 94)

Kratos has been through some changes and God Of War is unlike anything that came before it. Forgoing the gory, gratuitous gameplay from former titles it delivers a remarkably mature storyline with Kratos worrying more about his son’s future, rather than the losses he’s suffered and the revenge he thought he needed.

This action RPG plays flawlessly with a simple, but complex combat system and tight controls. The only flaw is that this game feels more like an introduction to a larger volume of work than a standalone title, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing if subsequent games can live up to this great title.

3 The Last Of Us Remastered (Metascore 95)

The Last Of Us Remastered

Considered a masterpiece by both critics and fans, The Last Of Us Remastered is considered the golden standard for storytelling. It took the dying genre of zombies and breathed new life into it, introducing dark and complex characters, a morally gray storyline and one of the most controversial endings gamers experienced in a long time.

Perhaps the only reason this title doesn’t have a better score is because it was seen as an update from the already incredible PS3 title. The graphics are definitely better and the few bugs were stripped away, but nothing else is different. But honestly the developers would have been insane to change anything on what many consider the perfect game.

2 Grand Theft Auto V (Metascore 97)

For years the Grand Theft Auto franchise was seen as little more than a glorification of criminal activity, horrible behavior and killing prostitutes. Grand Theft Auto V admittedly does have much of the same, but something’s changed in the franchise’s bones.

Grand Theft Auto V’s world is expertly crafted with life around every corner. The characters are both compelling and ridiculous, the plot is engaging, and the gameplay is solid. This isn’t even factoring in the addictive online play.

1 Red Dead Redemption 2 (Metascore 97)

You know you’re doing something right as a developer when Metacritic considers two of your games to be the greatest titles for the PS4 this decade. Red Dead Redemption 2 is a great western game that sets the standard for open worlds according to critics.

There are a lot of little details that make the world feel rich and complex, like making sure to brush your horse to keep its stamina up or keeping your guns clean, without any of it feeling tedious. The writing is great, even if things start out a bit slow, and it’s a fun sequel that critics can’t stop praising.
