The year 2021 is once again shaping up to be an interesting one for fighting game fans, with several games confirmed and existing games receiving content over the next few months. The ongoing final season of Street Fighter 5, the recent release of Lidia from Tekken, and Guilty Gear Strive's release in June are among several. It appears that fans of fighters will have more to look forward to in 2021 with a surprise announcement that few, if any, were expecting.

Melty Blood, the fighting game spin-off and sequel to Tsukihime, was one of the first titles that Japanese game developer French Bread worked on, gaining cult success from fighting game players and fans of the visual novel. French Bread would go on to develop the Under Night In-Birth series, backed by Arc System Works. The series proved to be a success for the company, with its latest title, Under Night In-Birth Exe: Late[cl-r] released last year. Now, it seems that French Bread has been given a chance to go back to its roots one more time.

TYPE-MOON, the original developer of Tsukihime, recently announced during the latest issue of its video game magazine, TYPE-MOON Ace, that Melty Blood will be getting a sequel. Titled Melty Blood: Type Lumina, the graphics of the game are an impressive step above the sprites of the original, featuring hand-drawn graphics similar to Under Night In-Birth.

While details are currently sparse, some of the features included in Type Lumina are the inclusion of at least 10 characters on launch. The game will release on the Switch, PS4, and Xbox One sometime in 2021 with French Bread aiming for a "worldwide" release. The game will also have rollback netcode, a highly request inclusion for a majorly online environment.

Melty Blood: Project Lumina releases on PC, PS4, and Xbox One sometime in 2021.
