M3GAN is dancing to the top of the box office, and audiences are in love. That means it's a real possibility that the killer doll will be back for a sequel, at least according to director Gerard Johnstone.

M3GAN is Blumhouse's latest offering. It's an unconventional film for the times, and M3GAN is something of a funny horror film. Whereas most horror films these days stick to earnest storytelling, M3GAN leans into camp while delivering some thrills.

In a new interview with Variety, Johnstone discussed how M3GAN evolved and the future possibilities for the franchise. According to Johnstone, Bruce, the motion capture robot, was more prominent in the original ending. "They had this battle with Bruce," Johnstone explains. "And there was gonna be one more part of it where they thought they’d got away, and Bruce essentially…they leave the workshop where they had this big battle, and then they hear a 'ka-chunk!' and it’s Bruce’s head being thrown. And then, through the smoke of the doorway, M3GAN emerges just as a disembodied torso, and Bruce is holding her from behind and clomping along the corridor. It was great, and I was really in love with it. But we couldn’t do it for a number of practical reasons. We tried to shoot that version, and the physics didn’t work out."

When asked about a M3GAN sequel, Johnstone seemed open to the idea. "How can I not be? [...] I totally think there’s there’s [sic] more to say," he said. "And I know that M3GAN would have more to say. I would love to do another one. Hopefully soon, while it's still fresh in everyone’s minds." He also mentioned the possibility of a M3GAN vs Chucky fight, which he believes M3GAN would win.

In October, the M3GAN and Chucky Twitter accounts were beefing, suggesting the idea behind a fight between the two is something the creative team thought of before. If a sequel does get made, it is possible the two could duke it out. In fact, the Child's Play trailer from 2019 was reuploaded following the release of M3GAN's trailer.

The M3GAN ending certainly leaves opportunities open for further exploration of the character. Though she is defeated, there's a suggestion that M3GAN could return in true horror movie fashion. Given the film's success, fans will probably not have to wait long for a sequel announcement, if there is one.

M3GAN is now in theaters.
