The Mega Man series has always been one that has conflicted me. While the series attracts legions of loyal fans, I just haven't been able to get into any of the past games. It's not that I dislike anything about the games as I love the idea behind the different themed bosses and I like the gameplay. There's just something that I can't quite put my finger on that keeps me from falling in love with each game.

It looks like that may be about to change though. The first trailer for the new Mega Man MMO set to be released on PC, Mega Man Online, has just hit the web and with the recent debut trailer for Mega Man Universe, it looks like we'll be seeing a lot more of the Blue Bomber over the next few years. Back to Mega Man Online though, while no gameplay is shown in the new trailer, it does give a good look at the new direction the series will be heading in. Check out the trailer below...

As a fan of the anime film Akira, I can't help but notice some similarities between this trailer and the film, particularly the darker tone. From the second I saw the hordes of robots tearing down barriers on the street and caught a glimpse of the city being leveled, standing in flames, I immediately fell in love with the art style. While I doubt the game will look quite like this, I'm definitely going to remain hopeful.

Aside from being a beautifully crafted trailer that sets the game up to have a truly grand scale, there's not much more that can be drawn from it. It is clear though, that we will see elements and characters from both the classic Mega Man series and the X series blended together. I've always been a fan of developers mixing together old and new in their games provided it is done well and is tasteful, so, even though I'm not the biggest fan of the series, this has even me excited to see how it will turn out.

While no release date has been announced yet, we'll bring you all the details regarding Mega Man Online as they surface.

What did you think of the darker tone to this trailer? Are you excited to see the blending together of new and old in the series?
