Mega Man is a brilliant, albeit troubled, series of games. With the 25th anniversary of Capcom’s blue bomber, the character has been getting much more attention lately. The fun mash-up Street Fighter X Mega Man is currently available for free, the original NES Mega Man games are now available on the 3DS EShop, and Mega Man 9 & 10 have launched on PSN.

While the fans of the franchise have been celebrating, new games seem to be few and far between. Fresh installments have been announced and promptly cancelled for unknown reasons, so hopes were high for Mega Man Online. The much anticipated MMO was highly anticipated but, unfortunately, has now been canceled.

The Mega Man Online buzz started in 2010 with the announcement of three new Mega Man titles: the first was Mega Man Universe, announced in July, this game was set to be a platformer to be released on PSN and XBLA. The game was later canceled early in 2011. Next was the aforementioned Mega Man Online, which even received a trailer in September of 2010. The last of the Mega Man announcements was Mega Man Legends 3 – also canceled in mid 2011.

After the cancellation of Legends, fans have been keeping a close eye on the status of Mega Man Online, but considering the official blog page hadn’t been updated since March of 2012 – gamers haven’t had high hopes for the title. Now, we have official confirmation that Capcom and online gaming company NeoWiz have mutually decided to end Mega Man Online development.

Capcom Has Not Forgotten About Mega Man

The announcement is a crushing blow for Mega Man supporters – considering there are no new series games in the pipeline. Mega Man‘s 25th anniversary might be showing love for the classics but the absence of new titles in the franchise is disappointing.

Yet, Mega Man is a well-know character – and some speculate that the latest cancelation is actually an indication that Capcom has bigger (and better) plans for the blue bomber. Hopefully, we hear something official soon.
