The upcoming Mega Man movie, announced by publisher Capcom on October 4th of 2018, now has a new writer penning its script in Mattson Tomlin, perhaps best known as the screenwriter for DC's future crime drama film The Batman. Mega-Man has no window for release as of yet, but The Batman is currently scheduled to open in the US on June 25th of 2021.
Mega Man will be the Blue Bomber's first official movie, the closest he's ever received before this being several animated TV series and a 2010 feature-length film made by fans of the series. This outing to the silver screen should be a much higher budget adaption to the franchise, considering that it's being handled by Chernin Entertainment, which has already made several films with 20th Century Fox (now 20th Century Studios) with production costs exceeding 100 million dollars.
Chernin Entertainment is notable for a variety of films, including the newer Planet of the Apes trilogy, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, The Greatest Showman, and Ford v Ferrari. In addition, the production company also worked on several television shows for Fox, including New Girl and Terra Nova. As many previous movies based on video games have shown, one exceptionally difficult hurdle in production is successfully adapting a virtual character into a live-action one. Hopefully, Chernin's experience on films like the Planet of the Apes trilogy, in which they were tasked with making convincing CGI apes, will transfer over to Mega Man, helping to create convincing looking robots.
Tomlin is more of an unknown factor, as he currently has less published works on his résumé. He has written, directed, edited, and produced numerous short films, in addition to directing writing the screenplay for a 2008 movie titled The Projectionist. Tomlin also has films other than The Batman and Mega Man in the making, though none of them have yet released.
Tomlin's involvement with Mega Man was announced via an article by The Hollywood Reporter. Other than stating that the film would be worked on by Tomlin and Chernin Entertainment, there was very little information about Mega Man released along with the report. Notably, the movie's previous writers, Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost, aren't mentioned, leaving their current relation to the project unclear.
Ideally, more information on the Mega Man movie will surface as time goes on, allowing for fuller, more educated opinions on the matter to be formed.
Mega Man currently has no release date, but The Batman is slated for June 25th, 2021.
