Recently, a Respawn Entertainment developer took the time to share before and after images of one of the best VR games of 2020. Level design in video games is not easy, and that is doubly true in VR. But the screenshots shared from a Respawn dev show just how much care and attention went into creating Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond.

Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond reviewed relatively well, and arguably, one of the best aspects of the game is the gorgeous art style and top-notch level design. Recently, Alexa Kim, senior game designer at Respawn Entertainment, unloaded a few very interesting tweets for the VR first-person shooter. The images are meant to highlight the level design process, from start to finish. The images are rather breathtaking.

The polygonal images before the final product look like something out of an old 3D PC game; perhaps a bit of an upgrade to Sonic 3D Blast on the Sega Saturn. But the end results are drastically different. Instead of simple colors and shapes, the "after" images are extremely detailed, filled with brilliant lighting, shading, and beautiful colors.

The hard work of a developer can often go unnoticed. Between the glitchy experiences that are met with an outcry, the overpowered guns that the community wants to be nerfed, or the high expectations that go unmet, the life of a developer is not always an easy one. These pictures that are shared by Alexa Kim show that working on something like a level for Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond--which a player might rush through in a matter of minutes--takes so much effort for someone working at Respawn Entertainment.

Kim shares little interesting tidbits with each shared tweet as well. In one image, there is text floating in the air that explains the fact that the room is a watermill, and that damaged parts are missing inside of this area. The next image is the final product, so this is where it is clear that the damaged and missing parts are in place inside of this watermill. Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond is certainly not a perfect game; it will continue to see patches and updates. But the attention to detail in these before and after images alone is a reminder of the work that goes into the development process.

Video games are a constant joy for so many. While it is easy to complain about the shortcomings, it is important to remember the fact that they are developed by hard-working individuals. Even with the absolute best games, sometimes the memory of the game moment, character, music, or story itself can overshadow the people who worked on it. Whether it is the story, the VR experience, or the multiplayer of Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond--or another game entirely--it is very important to be grateful for the hard work of the development team who made it all possible.

Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond is out now on Oculus.
