For anyone bummed out by the announcement that Rockstar’s third-person shooter Max Payne 3 would be delayed until May of 2012, what better a way is there to blow off some steam by watching a delectable montage of people shooting other people with guns?… Say, a Max Payne 3 montage of people shooting other people with guns, meaning at least one enemy’s life is guaranteed to conclude in a shower of blood after being landed on by a bus.

The aforementioned video is actually an official tech video from Rockstar Games, part of an ongoing series to highlight the nuances of Max Payne 3’s development during its journey to our disk tray. You might recall that back in November, Rockstar released its first installment in series entititled “Creating a Cutting Edge Shooter.” While that video highlighted the general technological framework being inputted into the game, the most recent edition sheds light on a subject more near and dear to Max’s heart: targeting and weapons.

It’s interesting to see how Rockstar is incorporating new ways to make gunplay in Max Payne 3 feel as smooth and weighted as a first person shooter. When Max moves, his upper and lower body are governed by two separate control points: the torso twists to accommodate Max’s desired aiming angle while his lower half remains free to move in any direction. Also, when prone, Max can roll and turn to maneuver himself along a 360 degree axis.

The guns themselves appear honed in on this same philosophy of fluid motion as well. While it wouldn’t be Max Payne without some good-old fashioned dual-wielding, players can combo up with different weapon classes at the same time. One example in the video shows Max holding a pistol in one hand and a sawed-off shotgun in the other while scraping baddies out of a hallway. The guns also input dynamic weight and recoil feedback into the way Max’s body weight gets shifted in real time.

It’s no surprise to see Rockstar fine tuning the hell out of Max Payne 3’s gunplay. Previous outings Grand Theft Auto IV, Red Dead Redemption, and L.A. Noire all featured gunfights as integral parts of their gameplay experience, but none of those have gone so far as to be defined by it the way Max Payne 3 is.

Former Payne developer Remedy Entertainment has already praised the Rockstar’s handling of the game. And if these multiplayer screenshots are any proof of the same polish being buffed in to the online portion of the game, we don’t mind if Max wants a few more rounds at the bar before appearing to the public.

Max Payne 3  is now scheduled to release on May 15, 2012 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.
