In the past, the Max Payne series has been characterized not only by its gritty film-noir style, but also by its strong use of slow motion gameplay mechanics. While this is a technique that has been seen in numerous games as of late, many are still reminded of the focus bullet time had on Max Payne’s gameplay. After two successful forays onto the streets of New York, the series may just be making its return later this year with the release of Max Payne 3.
Over the past year, the fate of Rockstar Games‘ upcoming title Max Payne 3 has been largely unknown. Following its delay into 2011, and its absence from Take-Two Interactive’s release schedule for 2011-2012, many gamers were left wondering whether the game’s release would be pushed back into 2012.
However, Amazon and Gamestop have recently begun changing their listed release dates for the ill-fated game, citing a December 1st release.
While it is common practice for stores to post approximate release dates in lieu of an officially announced launch day, Amazon has stated that the change was made by the game’s publisher. Even though no official statement has been made by Rockstar or Take-Two, this news may still hold clout.
In a recent discovery, it seems that entries for Max Payne 3 have been found in new Nvidia drivers, and when coupled with the sudden release date changes, this makes for a rather convincing hint at the game’s potential launch. Even so, this can only be taken with a grain of salt as neither Rockstar nor Take-Two have publicly stated anything to support this rumor.
Regardless, this is exciting news for gamers who have been waiting patiently for the game’s release. Originally scheduled to launch in late 2009, Max Payne 3 has been a long time in the making, with more than a few significant set-backs. Even so, with the news that bullet time would be returning as well as a different look at the life of character Max Payne, there’s been plenty to keep people interested.
Provided Rockstar can craft a dark and gritty story reminiscent of the past two games with an updated take on the series’ classic third person gameplay, Max Payne 3 could quickly become a highly anticipated title this holiday season.
Do you think there is sufficient evidence to suggest that Max Payne 3 will be releasing by the end of the year? What would you like to see added to the third iteration of the series?
Max Payne 3 is rumored to launch this December on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.
