We've seen plenty of interpretations of Gotham's caped crusader on the screen in the past, but with this upcoming installment on the horizon, we might get something we've never seen before. Matt Reeves, director of DCEU's upcoming film The Batman, is going to shed light on a side to Batman that his previous installments hardly ever did - his detective skills.

With there already being so many live-action installments starring the Dark Knight himself, Reeves wanted to approach the new film as a detective story. Seeing how one of Batman's most well-known nicknames is "The World's Greatest Detective" and yet none of his past films put much focus on that particular ability of his, Reeves believes that utilizing the Bat's expertise as a detective will make for a riveting case study both on Batman and Gotham City itself.

“This idea of a place that is corrupt, and you try to swim against the tide in order to fight against it and make a difference, is quintessential Batman. And at the center of those noir stories is almost always the detective, right? And that’s why he is the world’s greatest detective," said Reeves during an interview with MovieMaker. "And so this story is, in addition to being almost a horror movie, and a thriller, and an action movie, at its core, it’s also very much a detective story. It’s very narrative.” Pattinson added that he was impressed when Reeves' talk about making The Batman a detective story turned out to be true.

With how many movies we've already seen centered around Batman, it's great to see that Reeves is attempting to bring something fresh in the hero's next big-screen outing as opposed to repeating what has already been done. If The Batman sticks its landing, then there could be a solid chance it garners a reputation similar to that of the Batman trilogy that was headed by Christopher Nolan. The Dark Knight trilogy garnered acclaim and the second installment even earned Heath Ledger a posthumous Academy Award for his performance as the Joker.

Perhaps that's setting expectations a little too high, but since it's technically been almost a decade since we last saw a solo Batman movie, audiences are understandably excited to see what this new reboot can bring to the table that the previous franchises did not. Going the route of a detective story not only feels like a fresh choice but the correct one too. Exploring his prowess as the world's greatest detective could potentially give viewers an insight into both Bruce Wayne and Gotham City that they haven't seen before.

Alas, it might be best to keep expectations in check for now because we've seen interpretations of Batman that have not only been bad but downright reprehensible. Hence, anything is possible with The Batman coming out. As long as Reeves doesn't have our caped crusader show off his bat credit card or go on a killing spree, his interpretation should be tolerable at the very least.

The Batman is scheduled to be released in theaters on March 4, 2022.
