After a lot of talk, and a long wait, the first official trailer for The Matrix: Resurrections has finally been revealed. The action-packed three-minute trailer is a visual treat for all fans of The Matrix franchise, with many scenes reminiscent of one of the previous films in the trilogy.

The trailer was first teased on Monday, when the interactive website WhatIsTheMatrix.com was updated to offer fans the first look at the film. Fans were given the option to select between the iconic red and blue pills and depending on what color they chose, and the time of day, a teaser for The Matrix: Resurrections started to play, with randomly generated footage from the highly anticipated flick. There were reportedly 180,000 variations of the trailer, which had fans revisiting the website multiple times.

The studio has kept the plot of the film a secret so far, but based on the trailer, it seems like both Neo and Trinity do not seem to remember the events of The Matrix Trilogy, and Neo is even seen taking prescription blue pills in the clip. When the two run into each other, they don’t even recognize the other person, which points at their memories being reset.

Soon, Neo meets Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s character, and that’s when things change drastically. In the trailer, Mateen II is seen offering Neo the red pill, while asking him to get “ready to fly.” Rumor has it that newcomer to the franchise Mateen II will be playing a younger version of Morpheus in the film, and he is even seen wearing a similar ensemble in the trailer. But, there is no confirmation on the same yet, and Mateen II is keeping mum.

The clips in the trailer promise a lot of action sequences, with Neo’s powers seemingly amplified as he manages to stop missiles. This is definitely an upgrade on his ability to dodge and freeze bullets in mid-air.

The film, which is just a few months away from its release, was initially expected to premiere in 2022. However, Warner Bros. surprisingly moved its release date to December 2021, which has had fans of the franchise quite excited. The project was initially announced in August 2019, with director Lana Wachowski at its helm.

Original cast members Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Daniel Bernhardt, and Jada Pinkett Smith are confirmed to return and reprise their roles of Neo, Trinity, Agent Johnson, and Niobe respectively. Laurence Fishburne, however, will not be returning as Morpheus.

The name for the fourth instalment in The Matrix franchise was confirmed at CinemaCon in August 2021, and it was revealed that the upcoming film would be called The Matrix: Resurrections. Attendees of the event even got to see the first trailer back then, and fans have been patiently waiting for a month to be able to see the same video.

The Matrix: Resurrections will premiere in theaters on December 22, 2021.
