A question that has doubtfully been asked by any gamer ever has finally been answered. What would happen if a developer crossed a first-person shooter with a match-3 game? Think Call of Duty crossed with Candy Crush or Halo crossed with Jewel Quest. That seemingly ridiculous concept comes in the shape of Matcho from FiolaSoft Studio.

Matcho is a brand-new FPS game that blends gaming genres in an interesting way. Developer FiolaSoft Studio recently announced the new genre-bending title, and it bills itself as a first-person shooter that combines match-3 play elements, and as an action-adventure game with a full narrative.

In Matcho, players will take on the role of 25-year-old Max, who suffers from a mystery illness and has spent the past eight years locked away in a Triagon laboratory, located deep underground. Triagon has been attempting to cure Max's illness which involves very dangerous outbursts of anomalous energy. The plot will follow Max after the Triagon facility leader has been kidnaped by strange, bug-like creatures from outer space. Max heads off on a quest to attempt to save the Triagon leader, and repel the following alien invasion that utilizes the very same energy signature emitted by his perceived illness.

On paper, a first-person shooter and a match-3 mash-up game looks a bit strange, but the trailer does a good job of showcasing Matcho's unique gameplay mechanics. The trailer showcases some combat techniques players will utilize in the game such as the ability to telekinetically lift and combine three bots together culminating in a destructive explosion. Other mechanics showcased in the trailer are FPS staples such as wall-running, double-jumping, floating, and dashing in any direction. FiolaSoft Studio claims the game has a built-in parkour system and judging on the footage from the trailer this system looks more reminiscent of a parkour system akin to Titanfall 2 as opposed to the freedom of movement available in Dying Light 2.

The innovative idea put forward by FiolaSoft Studios' Matcho could be a breath of fresh air in a crowded market of FPS games that stay rigid to the established structure and often take themselves too seriously. It's refreshing to see a game attempt something outside the box and just have fun with the genre. FiolaSoft Studios is an indie company from Czechia and was formed in 2002. It has only released one previous title, the award-winning hardcore side-scrolling platformer Blackhole back in 2015.

Matcho is in development for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
