Revealed at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), a Dubai based company has created a product that will allow virtually endless supply of data storage to game consoles. It is called the Infinite USB Memory Drive (IUM) made by Infinitec. The new 'Unlimited' IUM is now available for pre-order. You can take a look at it from their official site.

The IUM resembles and functions as an USB drive that you place into your Xbox 360 or PS3. The IUM connects wirelessly to your computer for the purpose of storing as much information as you may wish from your console directly to your hard drive in your computer or to an external hard drive. A user of this new IUM, from Infinitec, has the potential to stream media from a personal computer to their console, and further permits a wireless connection to be given to their console without purchasing the attachment for an internet connection.

The system can also provide storage for anything! From Blu-ray players to High Definition Television to stereo systems. The IUM is also compatible with all major computer platforms, including Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Here is what the official site presents as the features for the new IUM:

  • ‘Unlimited File Sharing’ (To share files between your console and as many hard drives as desired)
  • ‘Complete Freedom’ (That you can decide what to share and control of what others may access)
  • ‘Serves all File Formats’
  • ‘Stream Your Media’
  • ‘Uninterrupted Playback’ (The IUM does not permit signal drops)
  • ‘Compatible With Any Operating System’
  • ‘Plug In And Play’
  • ‘Future Proof’ (meaning that as the most popular information sharing device, the USB will stand the test of time for many years to come).

The only real downside I see from this new product is that the emergence of transfer, selling and stealing (as common to user of the PC) of Xbox 360 and PS3 games. I believe this will create less differences between the console and PC users, but will increase the value of merchandise on the market and, perhaps, harsher restrictions and efforts to uphold copyright laws and legislation that directly impacts the recreational gamer. Who knows? We can only wait and see. In all, it is a brilliant idea for those unable or unwilling to obtain a larger hard drive for their Xbox 360 or PS3 and also gives people a chance to move around personal gaming data to play on other consoles and share files.

The Infinite USB Memory Drive if available now pre-order and will begin shipment on the 31 of August 2010. The product is for sale for $129.99 US. What do you think this device will be primarily used for?
