After the mixed response to Mass Effect: Andromeda, BioWare’s recent work on the Mass Effect franchise hasn’t yielded particularly successful results. Andromeda became a running joke online, with fans mocking its poor facial animations and stilted dialogue among a number of other major issues. However, it appears the studio has not given up on the series just yet though, especially as a recent tweet hints that it could be revisiting Mass Effect in a big way.

Posting a cryptic tweet with the hashtag "MassRelays," BioWare dropped a video containing the opening crawl that introduces the first game as well as a picture of the cover art serenaded by the title’s main theme song. While it’s fairly common for BioWare to talk about the Mass Effect trilogy, there’s something strange about the teaser, with many fans believing that it could be alluding to a highly-requested remaster of the iconic trilogy.

The hashtag, in particular, has peaked many fan’s interests, seen as it doesn’t seem to be alluding to anything within the footage. For those who haven’t played the game, a Mass Relay is a mode of hyper-speed travel in the Mass Effect universe that propels the player's ship between planets and solar systems at incredible speed. They’re one of the core aspects of the trilogy, yet, the mention of them in the hashtag seems to be strangely placed seen as there's none in the opening moments of the first game. Fans have speculated that perhaps it could allude to a Mass Effect: ‘Mass Relay Edition’ or something similar that will finally bundle all the titles together for modern consoles.

Obviously, this is based on pure speculation. However, it’s not as if a remaster of the original trio of games hasn’t been heavily requested. Since the release and subsequent failure of Andromeda, fans have been clamoring to return to the original Mass Effect trilogy, with the original three games never making the jump to modern platforms. Since then, BioWare’s Twitter posts and YouTube videos have been swarmed with fans begging for the studio to remaster the titles.

Seen as a new entry to the franchise could be years away, it would serve the studio well to port the title over to modern or next-generation consoles to keep the series’ fanbase alive. While they do have a sequel to the popular Dragon Age franchise also on the way, a Mass Effect port could be just the gesture of goodwill BioWare needs to extend right now, especially as its last two releases haven’t landed too well with its audience. Regardless, here’s to hoping Bioware’s cryptic tweet signals a bright future for Mass Effect going forward.
