Mass Effect is easily one of the most beloved science fiction universes in video games. Meanwhile, cake is easily one of the most beloved birthday desserts. A Reddit user recently showed off what happens when someone combines the two.

Reddit user altend94 shared his Mass Effect-themed birthday cake on the franchise’s subreddit. It’s an edible scale model of one of the series’ Mass Relays, ancient alien megastructures that enable Mass Effect’s interstellar travel.

The poster’s girlfriend made the cake for his birthday, and it certainly looks like she put a lot of effort into it. The two-pronged Mass Effect-themed pastry is a vanilla and chocolate marble cake. It has silver cream cheese icing with candles serving as the Mass Relay’s antennas. She also simulated the Relay’s swirling ball of energy by drawing it on the foil the cake rests on. The end product probably wouldn’t pass muster on Cake Boss but is still an impressive culinary accomplishment. It also looks like a fantastic birthday gift for any hardcore Mass Effect fan.

The cake saw an overwhelming response from fans on the Mass Effect subreddit. One person said they were happy to see more homemade projects on a subreddit dominated by professional-quality fan creations. There were also, of course, multiple semi-joking encouragements for altend94 to marry his girlfriend.

One of the commentors even made a pun about the game’s alien Keepers. Someone else referenced one always popular Mass Effect meme by saying, “I’m Commander Shepard, and this is my favorite birthday cake on the Citadel.” There were also a few jokes about Mass Effect’s dialog trees, with more than one commenter referencing Mass Effect’s overuse of the phrase “I should go” as an all-purpose way to end conversations.

Mass Effect-themed birthday gifts seem to be a trend, with multiple other examples appearing on the subreddit over the last few weeks. Some are officially licensed products, like the replica of Commander Shepard’s helmet. However, many are fan-made creations. One example is a man whose family commissioned a beautiful oil painting of Mass Effect’s Citadel.

Another Reddit user got special one-time permission from EA to make a pair of N7 sneakers for their fiancé’s birthday. There is also the somewhat unusual example of someone whose friends gave him a framed picture of fan-favorite character Tali printed on a page from a dictionary. The use of a dictionary is a bit odd, but the text definitely makes the image look striking and memorable.

These examples were only from within the last ten days, though it’s not clear whether this is an actual trend or merely a series of coincidences. Either way, there are no doubt plenty of Mass Effect fans who’d be thrilled if their friends and family drew inspiration from these gaming-inspired gifts.
