One of the most beloved video game franchises of the seventh generation was BioWare's Mass Effect, with the original trilogy of games earning widespread critical acclaim at the time of their release. Considering this, it's not surprising that fans are excited to return to the original Mass Effect games with the upcoming Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, and now it seems as though they only have a couple more months to wait, if a new leak is accurate.

It appears as though the Mass Effect: Legendary Edition release date is Friday, March 12. This is according to multiple retailers that have leaked the release date online, plus Eurogamer, which stated that it understands the leaked Mass Effect: Legendary Edition release date to "currently be accurate." It's possible that plans could change, though, so fans should take this information with a grain of salt until an official release date announcement comes from BioWare or EA.

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, for the uninitiated, is a remastered collection of the first three Mass Effect games for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. It will basically be the same that fans remember, but with improved visuals, the DLC included, and Mass Effect 3's multiplayer mode likely removed.

What's interesting about the upcoming Mass Effect: Legendary Edition is that the game does not have a proper PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X release planned. Like many other titles, there will be some benefits to playing Mass Effect: Legendary Edition on PS5 or Xbox Series X, but for one reason or another, a true next-gen version doesn't exist. Perhaps one will be released at some point down the line, but since both the PS5 and Xbox Series X are backward compatible anyway, fans will still be able to play the game on their new consoles.

In the meantime, some Mass Effect fans may be more interested in what's next for the franchise. BioWare has teased a new Mass Effect game that's in active development, with many veterans of the franchise returning to work on the new entry. So far, very little is known about the new Mass Effect, though the teaser trailer seems to suggest that it stars Liara T'Soni and will more directly deal with the events of the original trilogy and Commander Shepard than Andromeda did.

But Mass Effect: Andromeda isn't necessarily being abandoned just because BioWare appears to be taking Mass Effect back to its roots. BioWare could very well follow up on some of Mass Effect: Andromeda's lingering questions in the new Mass Effect game as well, so fans will need to standby for more concrete information.

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition is in development for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
