Mass Effect: Legendary Edition is out next week, remastering the original Mass Effect trilogy of games for current consoles with various improvements to bring them up to modern standards. Many of the improvements in Mass Effect: Legendary Edition seem aimed at the first Mass Effect game in particular, but as it turns out, one of the big changes is actually going to be completely optional.

As revealed in an interview with PC Gamer, Mass Effect: Legendary Edition lets players use the old-school Mako controls if they want. Everyone else can use the revamped Mako controls, which were implemented since many people were not impressed with the way the vehicle controlled in the original Mass Effect game. The Mako was infamous in the original Mass Effect for how poorly it controlled, so it stands to reason that most gamers are going to stick with the new controls.

Regardless, it's nice to see BioWare acknowledge that some fans may want a more authentic Mass Effect experience, even if it means putting up with less than ideal Mako controls. And it's always nice to have options, so anyone that doesn't want to put up with the old controls can simply stick to the new version and vice versa.

There are some fans who want BioWare to take the Mako controls in Mass Effect: Legendary Edition even further, however. In fact, a "petition" was started by fans that asked BioWare to make Mass Effect's Mako even harder to control, as a way to pay proper homage to the original game. BioWare doesn't appear to have added any kind of functionality like that, so fans will have to make do with the original controls.

Besides improving the Mako controls, Mass Effect: Legendary Edition makes a number of other important changes to the original Mass Effect game. The graphics have gotten a major overhaul to better match what people expect from games in 2021, plus a new universal character creator has been added so fans can have more consistency with Commander Shepard's appearance from one game to the next.

There are other Mass Effect 1 improvements in Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, though fans should be able to expect improvements in both Mass Effect 2 and 3 as well. If things go as planned, Mass Effect: Legendary Edition should be the definitive way to experience the games, and hopefully it's enough to tide fans over while they wait for more news on Mass Effect 4.

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition launches May 14 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
