The release of Mass Effect: Legendary Edition is a little over a month away, and details have been pouring in on what audiences can expect from the remaster. To make the experience even better than players remember, a lot of gameplay tuning and rebalancing have been done. For example, calibrations to the infamous M-35 Mako from the original Mass Effect are fixing many longstanding issues.

Despite the first game releasing all the way back in 2007, few have forgotten what driving the M-35 Mako was like. The controls were frustrating enough that several Mass Effect mods were created and specifically designed to make the experience better. Having heard feedback from players over the years, BioWare is fine-tuning and making improvements to the vehicle in Mass Effect: Legendary Edition.

The main issue with the Mako was that it was too bouncy and hard to handle, but after these new changes, it's a much smoother ride. That's not all that was adjusted, though. The Mako is also getting faster shield regeneration and new thrusters in its rear. The following are all of the changes being implemented:

  • Improved handling. Physics tuning improved to feel “weightier” and slide around less.
  • Improved camera controls. Resolved issues preventing the Mako from accurately aiming at lower angles.
  • Shields recharge faster.
  • New thrusters added for a speed boost. Its cooldown is separate from the jump jets’.
  • The XP penalty while in the Mako has been removed.
  • Touching lava no longer results in an instant Mission Failure and instead deals damage over time.

The most noticeable change in the remaster will be the graphical overhaul, which will make the world of Mass Effect sharper and more visually appealing. BioWare won't just be upgrading pre-existing graphics, however, but also adding new art assets to improve scenes. The best way to get a feel for how the games will look is to view the many Mass Effect: Legendary Edition trailers and screenshots revealed so far.

The remaster will be an excellent way to introduce the series to those who never got a chance to play it. For those that have, they get to experience their favorite Mass Effect moments all over again. The series is loaded with tons of memorable interactions with crewmates, heartwrenching emotional scenes, and romantic escapades, all of which can change depending on choices made by the player.

Choices are something all players will have to think carefully about. Those coming back to the series may make the same choices or try a different path, but it's worth thinking about before diving into the remaster. It could be fun to switch things up by choosing a different romantic interest, or by messing around with the Paragon and Renegade options to see how things play out.

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition releases on May 14 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
