Mass Effect Legendary Edition is one of 2021's most anticipated remakes. With the first installment in the trilogy having released nearly 15 years ago, Mass Effect is dated, but that leaves room for many upgrades. However, releasing games for the newest generation of consoles, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, would allow for the biggest enhancements. But whether or not Mass Effect Legendary Edition is coming to the next generation isn't a straightforward answer.

Though Mass Effect Legendary Edition is a remaster and not a remake, there's quite a lot of changes players can expect that should improve the space opera from the original trilogy. In general, Mass Effect 1 will look a lot better with reworked textures and stunning frame rates, bringing it up to modern standards. But as a whole, BioWare plans to unify the look of the trilogy, streamlining the games into a consistent experience. This will also improve switching between games, as the consistency should lessen the jarring experience of drastically different graphics between Mass Effect 1 and 3.

Is Mass Effect Legendary Edition Coming to PS5 or Xbox Series X/S?

The short answer is that Mass Effect Legendary Edition is not coming to PS5 or Xbox Series X/S natively, and is only being released for PC, PS4, and Xbox One officially. But players can choose to play PS4 or Xbox One copies thanks to backward compatibility on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.  However, this isn't to say players can't expect upgrades should they choose to play PS4 or Xbox One copies on their next-gen consoles. There are already a lot of visual enhancements coming with Legendary Edition's remastered gameplay and graphics.

For example, while the original trilogy often ran at 720p or lower, PS4 and Xbox One can run the games at 1080p. Regarding frame rates, these consoles are capped at 30 FPS, but depending on the console, this will be a major difference in running a PS4 copy on PS5 or running an Xbox One copy on Xbox Series X/S.

PS5 can run the game at 60 FPS, while Mass Effect Legendary Edition on Xbox Series X runs at 120 FPS, though the Series S will be capped at 30 FPS. PC players with the best hardware can run Mass Effect Legendary Edition as high as 240 FPS. And all next-gen consoles as well as the PS4 Pro can run the remastered trilogy at 4K.

The SSD in the newer consoles will also help decrease load times when running the games on PS5 or Xbox Series X/S, including those infamously lengthy elevator rides.

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition releases May 14, 2021, for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
