It would be impossible to talk about some of gaming's most iconic trilogies without mentioning the masterpiece that is the Mass Effect series. Commander Shepard and his ragtag bunch of teammates managed to pave their way into the hearts of every game lucky enough to experience this magical title for themselves.

One of Shepard's comrades who ended up being quite an iconic character is none other than Jack. A powerful biotic who also goes by the moniker of Subject 0 — much to the chagrin of Jack herself — she is easily one of the most powerful biotics in the entire game, with her fiery personality serving as a perfect accompaniment to her destructive biotic powers.

10 Jack's Mother Was Fooled By A Cerberus Agent Who Pretended To Be A Doctor

The Illusive Man in Mass Effect 2

Jack's story is a tragic one — her mother was fooled by a Cerberus agent, who pretended that Jack was suffering from a life-threatening illness and needed to be checked.

Obviously enough, her mother conceded to this request, and Jack was taken away forever into a Cerberus facility where she was turned into the biotic monster we all know today.

9 She Was Given Drugs To Turn The Feeling Of Killing Someone Into Pleasure

The experiments that Jack went through were nothing short of inhumane, with several other facets of her personality being forced to change aside from just her biotic talents.

Jack was also injected with drugs that turned the feeling of killing someone into pleasure, which is extremely messed up.

8 She Can Possibly Get Turned Into A Phantom

Jack's story might have a redemption arc with Shepard's interference... but the biotic can end up in dire straits if Shepard neglects the act of evacuating Grissom Academy's students.

Failing to do so leads to Jack's abduction by the forces of Cerberus once again, who end up turning her into a Phantom that attacks Shepard as well. It's a sad fate for a character who is beloved by many... and something players can prevent from happening if they're diligent enough.

7 She Used The Name Jacqueline Nought Once

Jack in Mass Effect

According to the records kept by the Shadow Broker, Jack used a pseudonym by the name of Jacqueline Nought once in her life — a name that cleverly combines both Jack and Subject Zero.

The first name — Jacqueline — is quite clearly derivative of the name Jack, while Nought is another word for "zero", which ties into the other moniker that the Cerberus scientists gave her during their vile experiments.

6 This Name Is Mentioned If She Dies In Mass Effect 2

The name Jacqueline Nought isn't just an insignificant fact about this character — this name actually comes up in a rather morose setting if Jack passes away during the events of the Suicide Mission in Mass Effect 2.

On the memorial wall of the Normandy, players can actually find the name "Jacqueline Nought" — a clever nod to the powerful biotic and her impressive contributions in battle.

5 Liara Can Actually Reveal Jack's Real First Name In Mass Effect 3

One of the more interesting conversations that can happen during the quest to evacuate Grissom Academy — if the player gets Liara with them to the Academy, then they are treated to an extremely interesting piece of information surrounding the biotic.

As is to be expected from Jack, she ends up being rather hostile towards the other members of Shepard's crew. However, if Liara is a part of said crew, then she drops a rather significant truth bomb by mentioning the fact that Jack's first name is actually Jennifer.

4 Her Relationship With Shepard Depends On His Paragon Or Renegade Status

Jack is one of the most interesting characters in the game mainly due to her incredible character arc — especially if she's romanced by a Paragon Shepard. In a bid to protect the person she loves, she tries to push Shepard away all the time... until the very end, when she finally gives in to her feelings in one of the most meaningful and romantic moments in the entire series.

What makes this moment even more powerful is the fact that she genuinely falls in love with Shepard because of his morals — if the player is going for a Renegade playthrough, then she'll just opt for a one-night stand instead.

3 She Was Meant To Be Pansexual At One Point

During development, Jack was actually meant to be a pansexual romance option who could've been with both male and female Sheperd. However, this idea was nixxed after the ludicrous smear campaign launched against the first Mass Effect title by Fox News.

It's a shame, especially since all of Jack's lines with female Shepard had been voiced and the intimate scenes had been animated as well.

2 Her Wanted Poster Can Be Seen During The Lair Of The Shadow Broker's Events

During the car chase that happens in The Lair of the Shadow Broker, players can notice a billboard featuring a wanted poster of one of their party members!

It's rather fleeting, but keen-eyed players will notice a criminal profile of Jack on the large hoarding above a tunnel.

1 Jack's Character Could Be A Reference To Her Namesake In The Chronicles Of Riddick

Jack in Chronicles of Riddick

Given Jack's appearance and the manner in which she is introduced in the game, it's very much possible that her persona is a nod to another fictional character in The Chronicles of Riddick — Jack B. Badd, also known as Kyra.

The similarities are quite striking — both characters are murderers who are bound in prison, both have shaved heads when they're introduced, and both of them are broken out of prison by the protagonist.
