If you are psyched for Star Wars: The Old Republic and enjoyed the dialogue format in Mass Effect, then good news! BioWare revealed that the conversation system in Mass Effect made them revisit and rebuild their system to follow suit - thus making you a happy Padawan.
Daniel Erickson, lead designer and storywriter at BioWare, spoke to CVG at E3 and explained their original intention and the ultimate decision to rewrite their conversation format for Star Wars: The Old Republic.
"Originally, the game was built far more like Dragon Age as far as conversation system went. Our player characters were not going to be voiced because it's a massively insane expenditure and hugely complicated to do. You have to cast 16 of the best actors ever and then hold them for eternity."
Erickson discussed that once the team saw Mass Effect's voice over conversation system, they had "no choice" and teamed up with LucasArts to jump on the voice over endeavor as well. He does give Mass Effect all the credit on the new conversation system, and praises the game for the main character portrayal.
"Mass Effect changed the world because you became the hero. You actually became the most interesting thing on screen - you got all the best lines and to be super cool. We had to go back and rewrite everything [in Star Wars: The Old Republic]. The story telling system is totally inked from Mass Effect."
Adding voice over will truly help elaborate on the depth of the anticipated MMO. Having to read a ton of text, versus hearing the diversity of character's voices and tones can be a vast difference in regards to how immersed in the game you can be.
Anyone interested in Star Wars: The Old Republic, myself included, has high hopes and expectations for the MMO. The dialogue system approach sounds like it's the best move for that corridor of the game, and it helps solidify promise of a positive outcome - let's just hope it doesn't go all Last Airbender on us!
Star Wars: The Old Republic is scheduled to hit shelves Spring 2011 for PC.
