The Mass Effect series has had a considerable number of items for the main characters to wear, whether it’s in the base games or in DLCs that offered even more options. Many players forgo the best armor stat-wise, in order to use an outfit with better aesthetics.

There have also been a number of unfortunate-looking outfits that players are often happy to get rid of. This list will explore some of the best things you could wear through the main series as well as some of the worst.

10 Worst: Kett Armor (Mass Effect Andromeda)

The Kett are a hostile alien race encountered in the Andromeda system by the Pathfinder and their crew. The Kett are brutal warriors with a bony outer structure sprouting from their body to form a type of natural armor. The constructed armor they wear resembles this appearance.

The result is an unfortunate looking set of armor that looks bulky, spiny, and downright uncomfortable to wear. The breathing tubes feeding into the chest look awkward and landing on the shoulders can’t feel all that amazing.

9 Best: Collosus X (Mass Effect)

The reptilian Krogan are a fierce warrior race that have allied with humans on a number of issues when facing a greater threat. Given their warlike nature and hunger for battle it’s no surprise that they would have some impressive looking armor.

The Collosus X is probably their greatest looking armor. With the dark black plating and the intricate red designs, they make for a fearsome sight on the battlefield. To be clear, their other armors are really great, but the Collosus X is a definite winner.

8 Worst: Hahne Kedar (Mass Effect 3)

This is probably a controversial inclusion, but the Hahne Kedar set of armor from Mass Effect 3 is probably the worst looking armor in the game. The bicep plates are bulky, the neck is high and cumbersome, and the lower half looks more like a futuristic flight suit with armor on the front leaving the back legs and buttocks completely exposed.

There’s also the matter that it doesn’t come with a helmet or head protective gear of any kind. Some players enjoy going without a helmet, but when the bullets and lasers start flying you’d definitely want something.

7 Best: N7 Demolisher Engineer (Mass Effect 3: Multiplayer)

This set of armor is unique to the multiplayer version of the game which is a crying shame because of how awesome it looks. Everything is sleek and tight-fitting to better facilitate mobility or stealth, the gray helmet is intimidating, and the bionic arm looks great.

It was a tough call given how incredible the armors in the Earth DLC pack look, especially the N7 Destroyer Soldier, but this one definitely comes on top for the unique brownish appearance and a more polished look.

6 Worst: Maverick Skirmisher (Mass Effect Andromeda)

The Maverick Skirmisher was definitely going for that rogue bounty hunter look, but got lost along the way and comes across as more of a junkyard ravager kind of motif. Everything looks cobbled together with whatever the wearer found; a sturdy vest, clunky pauldrons, plain gauntlets, and an ugly helmet.

Admittedly you’d probably want this set if you planned on invading a desert planet and expected there to be a lot of dust and debris in the air, but in a universe with advanced tech, strong metals, and suits of armor bordering on being classified as small vehicles, why would you wear this?

5 Best: Hyper Guardian (Mass Effect Andromeda)

Andromeda might have some of the ugliest armor in the series, but the Hyper Guardian set is a thing of beauty. The wearer immediately has a robust and strong appearance thanks to the layered plating, stocky build, and almost muscular limbs.

The black face plate also provides a lot of visibility for the wearer while maintaining an intimidating appearance. It’s the kind of suit that makes you afraid to engage the wearer in hand-to-hand combat.

4 Worst: Deep Space Explorer (Mass Effect Andromeda)

Speaking of ugly armor from Andromeda, the Deep Space Explorer set has to be the worst. It’s the kind of thing you’d expect from a cheesy Sci-Fi. It almost looks like someone took a blue and white motorcycle racing suit and slapped a hi-tech breathing apparatus, a helmet, and minimal armor on the torso.

This is the kind of armor you’d wear when you’re more interested in exploring planets by riding shotgun in an ND1 Nomad with the Roll Initiative paint job than keeping your comrades alive when the Kett attack. Honestly wearing this armor is one of the worst choices you can make in this game.

3 Best: Collector (Mass Effect 2)

The Collectors are a terrifying species of alien who at best want to make ridiculous trades for living beings for unknown reasons or at worst are under the thumb of the Reapers. Their armor makes Shephard look like a living nightmare with a suit of armor that seems to be growing off of him.

This is easily one of the most intimidating sets of armor you’ll find in the series as it’ll unsettle even the most hardened combatant with it’s alien/hellish appearance. There’s a reason the Collectors were so feared for so long and this kind of armor has a lot to do with it.

2 Worst: Phoenix (Mass Effect)

This entry is definitely going to ruffle some feathers, but it must be said, out of all the different kinds of armor a person can pick in Mass Effect the Phoenix set was probably the worst. The white and red aesthetic made your characters look like uniform soldiers sent as representatives of a reformed Empire in a galaxy far, far away.

They provide no camouflage and look like they were made of plastic. If you want an intimidating white suit of armor, go with the Hyper Guardian set, if you want a hostile looking red suit go with the Collosus X, but never, ever mix the two.

1 Best: Terminus Assault (Mass Effect 2)

The best looking outfit in the entire Mass Effect series has to be the Terminus Assault set in Mass Effect 2. It breathes badass futuristic soldier and is exactly what you’d want to wear into battle. The variations of the armor such as Garrus’s look alright, but by far the human set for Shepherd is the best.

This is definitely what you want to be wearing when you wield the M-490 Blackstorm into battle and both come with the Terminus Weapon and Armor DLC. When facing the horrors and monstrosities found at the edge of the darkest part of the cosmos, you want to look like you probably came from there as well.
