The first of a series of gameplay videos has been released for Mass Effect: Andromeda, showing off a range of weapons and skills present in the new fast-paced combat system.

With just over a month left until we can start our Mass Effect: Andromeda adventure, the series’ official YouTube channel has put out a video detailing the weapons and combat skills that will be found in the upcoming game. As announced on Twitter yesterday, the video looks to be the first of several other gameplay videos, aiming at showing off exactly what’s new in Andromeda.

The video begins with a brief introduction into Mass Effect: Andromeda‘s story. Players will reportedly take on the role of the Pathfinder, the ultimate adventurer in a vast, unexplored galaxy, on a mission to find a new home for humanity. After that, the footage shows off some of the fluid, fast-paced combat that developer BioWare has brought to the franchise.

The previously-revealed jumpjet can be used to great effect, allowing players to dodge quickly to one side, as well as boost upwards and hover. A new dynamic cover system allows for more freedom in combat, and will see players being able to use almost anything as a shield from incoming fire, including their own vehicle.

The traditional four weapon types: pistols, assault rifles, shotguns, and sniper rifles, are present in Andromeda, but none will be restricted to specific classes as we’ve seen in previous installments to the Mass Effect franchise. There will also be a range of melee weapons, such as hammers or swords, available to collect, allowing for heavy damage up close.

A variety of guns from different galaxies will be present in-game too, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. Opting to use a weapon from the Milky Way means that you’ll need ammo to fire, though the bullets will hit hard to non-shielded enemies. Beam weapons, on the other hand, don’t require ammo and have a high rate of fire with good accuracy, but will require time to cool down once used excessively. Plasma weaponry will also make an appearance, requiring either charge time or a slower rate of fire, though they do send out heat-seeking blasts.

In Mass Effect: Andromeda, players can make use of a flexible skill system by putting points into one of three skill trees: Combat, Biotics, or Tech. These are not restricted by the player’s class and will help each individual customize their character to suit their own preferences. There are a range of new skills for fans of the series to experience, as well as returning favorites.

The video concludes with a hint at what will be releasing in part two of the newly-launched gameplay series, which is set to include protagonist profiles, favorite loadouts, as well as squad skills and commands. We’re certainly impressed with what we’ve seen so far, and it’s going to feel like a long wait until March where we’ll finally get our hands on the next title in the Mass Effect franchise.

Mass Effect: Andromeda launches on March 21, 2017 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
