Mass Effect: Andromeda‘s PS4 Pro frame is “to be decided,” says creative director Mac Walter, despite the developer previously targeting 30 FPS on PS4 and PS4 Pro.
Following the PS4 Pro announcement presentation in September, it was confirmed that Mass Effect: Andromeda would have the same frame rate on PS4 and PS4 Pro (3o FPS). The confirmation from the game’s producer, Fabrice Condominas, came as a surprise to many gamers who had hoped that Andromeda would make the most of the Pro’s improved hardware specs and push for 60 frames per second. The game was in pre-alpha when Condominas said this, however, and so some held out hope for more optimization.
Those who remained optimistic were right to do so, it seems. In an interview with Game Informer the game’s creative director Mac Walters clarified that the Mass Effect: Andromeda PS4 Pro frame rate is “to be decided.” Walters also revealed that the game would run at 30 FPS “on some platforms,” pointing to high-end PCs with higher capabilities when asked to clarify.
With several months to go until Mass Effect: Andromeda‘s ‘spring 2017’ release date, it makes sense that the development team at BioWare is still working to establish solid specs. Publisher EA may have said that it is willing to delay Andromeda for months if the game isn’t ready, but that doesn’t mean that BioWare has to push the game to its technical limits at the expense of players on other platforms having to wait for the game. With the PS4 Pro able to run Andromeda in 4K, many gamers agree that they would rather take that visual upgrade than risk having to wait more time for 60 frames per second as well.
Moreover, if Andromeda was only available at 4K and 30 FPS on the PS4 Pro, it certainly wouldn’t be the only game with those specs. Final Fantasy XV is also targeting 30 FPS and 4K on the PS4 Pro, for example, as is motorcycle racing game RIDE 2.
On the other hand, though, some are disappointed that BioWare isn’t pushing for more. With Andromeda being the first Mass Effect game optimized for the current generation of consoles, some fans would happily take a delay if it means that the game can look the best it can be. The final frame rate is still up in the air so these gamers may not be let down by BioWare’s decision after all, but watch this space for now.
